Dean of Students
JOB GOALS: The Dean of Students at University Heights Charter School leads school-wide student culture building. This includes establishing and communicating high expectations for student character, scholarship, and leaders, and is reinforced through a system of rewards and consequences. The Dean of Students also leads school-wide efforts to build pride in students' history and cultures, and respect for other people's histories and cultures. The position is collegial, not supervisory.
QUALIFICATIONS:
REPORTS TO: Principal
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Lead School Culture
- Inspire students to meet high expectations by leading community and classroom presentations.
- Develop character education curriculum for teachers to use in advisory classes.
- Lead summer programs to orient new students to school culture.
- With principals, establish rules, routines, and procedures that will support excellent school culture.
- Manage school lunch in orderly fashion to minimize disruption and support education program.
- Maintain Strong Discipline
- Supports and enforces school code of conduct, discipline, uniform, and attendance policies.
- Implement behavior tracking systems, including the weekly paycheck system
- Recognize exemplary student character and leadership.
- Communicate with parents when children are not meeting behavior expectations and working with them to help their children improve.
- Maintain discipline office hours.
- Facilitate non-violent conflict resolution and peer mediation.
- Maintain and implementing student behavior files and action plans.
- Support Staff
- Support teachers in upholding high expectations for students throughout the school day, in hallways, classrooms, and other venues. This includes providing collegial feedback, suggesting and modeling strong classroom management techniques, and addressing students directly as needed.
- Participate in Behavior Meetings to discuss exemplar students and students of concern and follow-up with recognitions (such as character, Scholar, and Leadership Awards) and interventions (implementing behavior logs, parent meetings, etc).
- Lead professional development to help teachers in maintaining school culture, effective classroom management, and non-violent conflict resolution.
- Work with teachers to coordinate school field trips.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Ten-month employee. Salary to be recommended by Executive Director and approved by board.
EVALUATION
Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with the board's policy on evaluation.
