Principal of Special Education (District-Wide) QUALIFICATIONS:
New Jersey Principal Certificate or eligibility.
Training and experience equivalent to a Master's Degree, preferably in educational leadership.
Successful teaching experience at the elementary school level.
Demonstrated leadership skills in the areas of curriculum development and instructional improvement.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Strong commitment to youth and ability to work effectively with parents.
Successful in creating collaborative relationships or coalitions.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Commitment to school design and philosophy.
Required criminal history background check, proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident status & NJ residency.
REPORTS TO: Executive Director
JOB GOAL: The principal is charged with the administration, supervision, and operation of the individual special education school program. It is the principal's responsibility to see that the school functions within the framework of the policies of the Board of Trustees and the State Board of Education. The principal is expected to provide leadership to the staff and assists in interpreting the educational program in the community.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Assumes responsibility for the management of the school in accordance with law, administrative code and Board policies and regulations.
Exercises leadership in school-level planning for improvement of instruction in collaboration with principals and district level staff. Involves teachers and parents in the development and implementation of state-required school plans to achieve pupil performance objectives, curriculum content standards, and core course proficiencies with a focus on special education.
Adheres to and supports the 5 year strategic plan.
Serves on the interview panel for potential staff
Attends recruitment fairs as necessary
Tracks and monitors Special Education students progress through assessments and 9 week assessment
Participates in master scheduling and testing schedules for students
Establishes and maintains an effective learning climate in the school.
Recommends selection of appropriate instructional materials; and monitors delivery of the instructional program to support students.
Leads development, evaluation and revision of curriculum and assumes responsibility for the implementation of approved programs.
Interviews, recommends for appointment, assigns, supervises and evaluates the performance of all school employees and assists them in achievement of their job goals.
Conducts periodic observations of teaching staff members; prepares written comments; and offers constructive suggestions for improvement when appropriate.
Ensures the safekeeping of student and personnel files and other confidential records and documents; and the destruction of public records in accordance with law and regulations.
Approves the master teaching schedule and classroom assignments.
Maintains high standards of student conduct and enforces discipline as necessary in accordance with board policy and the students' rights to due process.
Notifies immediately the parent or guardian and the Executive Director to arrange for an immediate examination by a physician of any pupil suspected of being under the influence of alcohol or other drugs or of using anabolic steroids.
Leads and attends the school's and district special education meetings CST, SIT,RTI, PIRT
Conducts all special education training for special education teachers and staff
Evaluates special education staff by completing one evaluation in collaboration with the principal
Updates principals weekly concerning their school
Assess programmatic needs and makes recommendations
Chairs school safety team
Leads Title 1 Meetings
Monitors Easy IEP
Provides monthly updates on meetings, accommodations and service delivery
Supports operations and safety as needed
Creates community impact events
Participates in the planning and delivery of intervention and referral services for pupils who are having difficulty in their classes and who have not been classified in need of special education.
Prepares or supervises the preparation of all reports, records, and other paperwork required or appropriate to the school's administration.
Conducts staff meetings as necessary for the proper functioning of the school.
Plans and supervises regularly scheduled parent/teacher conferences; and makes arrangements for special conferences as necessary.
Acts as a liaison between the school, the home and the community; interprets policies, programs and activities.
Assumes responsibility for his/her continuing professional growth and development by attendance at professional meetings, memberships in professional organizations, enrollment in advanced courses and by reading professional journals and other publications.
Attends special school-sponsored activities and functions.
Performs other duties, which may be assigned by Executive Director or required by law, code, regulation/board policy.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Twelve month employee. Salary to be recommended by Executive Director and approved by board.
EVALUATION
Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with the board's policy on evaluation.
