The Salem Public Schools seeks an innovative, dynamic and collaborative educator to serve as program administrator of ELLs at Salem High. This is an exciting opportunity for an instructional leader who is passionate about providing equity and excellence to English Language Learners. The successful candidate will have a strong knowledge of second language instruction and pedagogy, skill in navigating and facilitating conversations and learning opportunities for adults across lines of difference, excellent family outreach and engagement strategies, and an relentless belief in the potential for all ELL students to succeed at high academic levels. The successful candidate will also hold an unwavering belief in the power of school communities to make a difference in the lives of young adults. This individual will work under the general supervision of the District Director for English Language Learning.

ESL Supervisor responsibilities include
  • Observe and provide formal and informal observation and coaching of all ESL teachers at the school, including formative and summative evaluations
  • Collaborate with Principal on instructional design, curriculum development, assessment and training so that school leaders and teachers are growing rapidly and performance gaps are closed quickly for English Learners
  • Facilitate weekly PLC's (professional learning communities) for ESL teachers to engage in lesson study, data cycles, and looking at student work
  • Oversee all elements of Newcomer Program including initial registration and intake, native language testing, quarterly data cycles, intervention, and student transition to mainstream SEI classes
  • Run small group and full staff professional development for Salem High staff in second language acquisition and culturally responsive and sound pedagogical practices
  • Oversee annual ACCESS for ELLs testing including master test schedule creation, training of proctors, make-up testing, and data reporting
  • Communicate proactively and regularly with students' families to partner for student success


Qualifications
  • Massachusetts teaching certification/licensure in ESL/ELL; Highly Qualified status under No Child Left Behind
  • Administrator/Principal/Director License
  • Five or more years of successful teaching in ESL or related field
  • Administrative/Supervisory Experience highly preferred
  • Persistent belief in the potential of all students of any language proficiency level to succeed academically; asset-based mindset
  • Deep knowledge of the WIDA Standards, Common Core and language acquisition practices
  • Demonstrated ability to model effective ELL and SEI-content lessons (e.g. aligned to standards, use of sheltering, designed based on data, etc.)
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively with teachers
  • Experience providing strong professional development for teachers that models sound pedagogical practices
  • Experience communicating with parents/guardians about student progress and language acquisition
  • Second language proficiency (Spanish preferred)
  • Masters degree in subject or related area

The position reports to the Director of English Language Learning, other duties at the discretion of the ELL Director. This is a 195-day Position within the Administrative Bargaining Unit.
