Job Summary
Conducts on-site technical inspections of school facilities and fire safety systems.? Provides effective training to professional and paraprofessional personnel on the proper methods for staging fire drills, evacuating handicapped persons, storing and disposing of flammable materials and operating and maintaining fire extinguishing equipment.? Inspects fire alarm systems, fire fighting equipment and building structures for potential fire hazards and investigates fire stricken facilities to determine the cause and origin of the fire.
Essential Functions
  • Provides hands-on training for custodial personnel on the use and maintenance of portable fire extinguishers; conducts training programs for fire prevention activities with professional and paraprofessional employees; responds to requests for fire drill training and assistance; observes evacuation procedures, staging areas, location and nature of exits and bottlenecks; provides critical feedback on the drill.
  • Responds promptly to a fire affected facility to document and determine the cause and origin of the fire; gathers evidence and accumulates details; conducts interviews to determine whether there is evidence of forcible entry and/or arson; takes photographs; prepares full technical and damage reports for submission to both the Office of General Counsel and the Office of the City Fire Marshall.
  • Visits school facilities to observe and correct all fire code violations and eliminate any liability threatening situations.
  • Surveys and prepares the necessary schematics and room plans for auditoriums, cafeterias, gymnasiums and assembly rooms; ascertains the capacity and conditions of legal occupancy; administers the high rise fire code.
  • Maintains 24-hour per day, 7-day per week availability via mobile telephone or paging device(s) for response to emergency or related operational issues.
  • Acts as a liaison with the Department of Licenses and Inspections to insure the adherence to all codes and standards.
Minimum Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Five years of full-time, paid, experience in a municipal fire department, at least two of which have been at the level of Captain.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of fire prevention, hazardous materials management, and sheltering-in-place for hazardous materials incident.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the operations, maintenance and repair of wet and dry standpipe systems, and sprinkler systems.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of equipment testing procedures and standards prescribed by the National Fire Protection Association.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of inspectional and investigational methods and procedures.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of fire codes as prescribed by the National Fire Protection Association.
  • Knowledge of municipal fire and related codes, ordinances and regulations governing fire prevention and safety in schools, public buildings and high rise structures.
  • Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.
  • Ability to ascertain facts by personal contact and observation.
  • Ability to enforce fire codes, ordinances and regulations.
  • Ability to train diverse audiences in fire safety and prevention.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Additional Job Information: This is a PFT-represented position. Interviews may be conducted to determine how well a candidate meets the established criteria. Note that not all qualified candidates may be selected for an interview. Additional factors including the ability to follow directions, punctuality and professional conduct will be considered in part of the evaluation process. The selected candidate must have no anecdotal record on file and have not been subject to any disciplinary action within the past eighteen (18) months, and have an excellent record of attendance and punctuality during the last three (3) years (defined as no more than eighteen (18) occasions of lateness or absence for personal illness in the last three years (3) years with the exception of one extended long-term absence.
