The Chicago Public Schools (CPS) has set ambitious goals to ensure that every child, in every community, has access to a high quality education that prepares them for success in college and career.

CPS is seeking a Senior Assistant General Counsel who will work in the Labor and Employee Discipline Unit of the Law Department. This Senior Assistant General Counsel will be second in-charge of the Unit and a direct report to the Deputy General Counsel. The Senior Assistant General Counsel will be responsible for:

  • Provide direction and strategy on employee discipline matters throughout CPS;
  • Litigating employee discipline matters before all administrative agencies and in court;
  • Handle grievance arbitration and unfair labor practice charges in traditional Labor Law forums; and
  • Counsel the client on a variety of labor and employment law issues as they may arise.

This Senior Assistant General Counsel will be responsible for working closely with CPS clients and upper-management to ensure that labor and employment law cases are properly handled and litigated. The Senior Assistant General Counsel is also charged with reviewing the legality of employee relations strategies and policies, and possessing a keen knowledge of federal and state statutory and case law in employment and labor areas as well as all areas that may impact the District.

In order to be successful and achieve the above responsibilities, the Senior Assistant General Counsel must possess the following qualifications:

Type of Education Required: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's degree. Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school and licensed to practice law in the state of Illinois.

Type of Experience and Number of Years: Minimum of five years of legal practice in the labor and employment law area preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Is a strong communicator; speaking, listening, and writing.
  • Ability to be a problem solver and independent worker.
  • Effectively litigate cases before arbitrators, hearing officers, administrative agencies, and courts.
  • Knowledge of best practices in employment and labor law, and federal and state related law areas.
  • Ability to build trusting relationships and function effectively with Officers, Senior Leaders, Department Managers, and school-based staff.
  • Communicate and work with upper management on a variety of high-profile issues and cases.

Salary: Salary commensurate with experience.

Residency Requirement:

As a condition of employment with the Chicago Public Schools (CPS), employees are required to live within the geographic boundaries of the City of Chicago within six months of his or her CPS hire date and maintain residency throughout their employment with the district.
