TITLE: Speech Therapist
REPORTS TO: Director of Special Education

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provides assessment and remediation services to students with speech impairments within the school setting.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILTIES:

PLANNING
• Plans effectively for therapeutic intervention
• Develops clear and concise written objectives for lesson plans.
• Identifies and plans for individual difference in the therapy setting.
• Consults with teacher(s) to develop appropriate goals and objectives for identified
students.

MANAGEMENT
• Maintains an environment conducive to therapeutic intervention.
• Takes appropriate precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
• Maximizes the amount of time available for each therapy session.
• Maintains records as mandated by state, federal, and school board guidelines and policies.
• Manages learner behavior to provide productive therapeutic intervention.
• Administers appropriate tests based on student need.
• Serves as a member of the Pupil Appraisal Team for students requiring a speech therapy
assessment.
• Refers any student with suspected vocal pathologies to Laryngology Clinic and prepare
the student for the examination.
• Conducts or attends LEP Conferences for students identified to Pupil Appraisal with
speech impairments.

INSTRUCTION
• Delivers instruction effectively.
• Implements a program of appropriate goals and objectives for Special Education students
with speech impairments.
• Presents appropriate content through therapeutic intervention.
• Utilizes knowledge of clinical methodology and child growth and development.
• Provides opportunities for student involvement in the therapeutic process.
• Re-teaches when necessary.
• Gives positive feedback throughout the session.

• Assesses student progress and measures student growth using established goals and

• Uses a variety of evaluative tools to test for understanding and acquisition of
communication skills.
• Informs the parent/guardians, teachers, and other professionals of the student's progress.
• Integrates technology into instruction.

• Participates in grade-level/subject area curriculum planning and evaluation.

classroom expectations, student progress, and ways they can assist learning.
• Encourages parents/caregivers to become active partners in their children's education and

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The Speech Therapist will work in a climate controlled environment adhering to School Board energy policy and in the outside areas which are subject to climate extremes. Workday consists of regular Central Office hours. The length of the workday varies as the result of evening activities or emergencies. In addition, job responsibilities may require work on weekends or
holidays and attendance at meetings

COMMUNICATION SKILLS:
The Speech Therapist must be able to effectively communicate in English both orally and in writing. Must have ability to accurately give and receive information via telecommunication system and must be able to communicate successfully with students, teachers, parents, school personnel, and the community.

EOU1PMENT USED:
The Speech Therapist should be able to use telephones, audio-visual equipment, classroom computer, copy machines, laminators, calculators, and other appropriate machines.

PHYSICAL INVOLVEMENT:
The Speech Therapist should be able to perform these physical activities: standing, walking, reaching, bending, and lifting 10 pounds (sometimes required). Must be able to operate classroom equipment.

MENTAL INVOLVEMENT:
The Speech Therapist should be able to plan and implement appropriate educational programs from all students and teachers. Must be able to understand and interpret written and verbal instructions. Must keep accurate, up-to-date written records. Must be able to comply with state and parish regulations. Must be able to utilize effective classroom management techniques.

HUMAN RELATIONS INVOLVEMENT:
The Speech Therapist must be able to work cooperatively with students, teachers, parents, school personnel, and the community. Must be able to respond appropriately to supervision and accept commendations and recommendations. Must demonstrate sensitivity/understanding interpersonal relations with person of diverse cultures/backgrounds.

OIJALIFICATIONS:
Must possess a current valid license issued by the Louisiana Board of Examiners for Speech Pathology and Audiology, and the therapists must possess a valid Louisiana Teacher's Certificate in the area of speech therapy.
