    POSTION TITLE: Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA)

    POSITION SUMMARY:
    Under the supervision of a Licensed Occupational Therapist, the Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant (COTA), performs therapeutic interventions, including compensation, remediation and prevention strategies and adaptations, focusing on functional mobility and safe, efficient access and participation in activities and routines in the natural learning environments.
    The COTA works to improve student access and participation in school and community environments. The COTA will provide professional expertise and training to teaching and para professional staff in the areas of self-help skills, foundational fine motor skills, mobility skills (transfers, walking, and equipment use), posture and positioning, and recreational skills for age-appropriate play.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
    • Promote independence in activities of daily living through problem solving, suggesting adaptations, and observations of the student;
    • Observe, problem solve and suggest positioning techniques to enhance educational participation and maximize function;
    • Consult and assist classroom staff through gathering and sharing information at team meetings when requested;
    • Discuss and exchange information about the students assigned with occupational therapist;
    • Utilize task analysis to suggest techniques to the educational team with regarding to feeding, activities of daily living, pre-writing, pre-cutting, and other skills needed for school performance;
    • Implement the individualized/small group therapeutic program prescribed by the occupational therapists based on goals and objectives;
    • Collaborate with colleagues and parents in order to share information and expertise to plan and implement effective student programs;
    • Assist occupational therapist in determining extent to which goals and objectives are being met by collecting and maintaining data on individual student goals;
    • Examining and evaluating eligible students' strengths and needs to establish their ability to participate in meaningful school activities and routines with or without assistance;
    • Adapting environments to facilitate student access and participation in the educational program;
    • Coordinating occupational therapy interventions within the school program;
    • Selecting, modifying, or customizing adaptive equipment and assistive technology.
    • Educating and training school personnel and families to promote inclusion of students within the educational experience be developing, demonstrating, training, and monitoring the effectiveness of strategies and intervention activities, using data to make decisions. This includes the use of assistive technology for access and participation in the general education curriculum.

    EDUCATION/TRAINING/EXPERIENCE:
    • Bachelor's Degree/COTA from accredited program
    • Spanish speaking is preferred, but not required

    LICENSES OR CERTIFICATIONS:
    • Valid Colorado Driver's License.
    • Valid Colorado Department of Education Licensure as a COTA.

    ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
    • Frequent lifting 5 (five) to 10 (ten) pounds.
    • Occasional lifting of up to one hundred fifty (150) pounds.
    • Frequent sitting, bending, walking, stooping, kneeling, squatting, reaching and standing.
    • Ability to run, jog, swim and/or expel physical exertion in order to appropriately respond to needs of students.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT:
    • Mostly clean and comfortable.
    • The work environment is high energy.
    • Physical restraint may be necessary to provide safety for students and others.
    • May encounter noise, odors or bodily fluids.

    REPORTS TO:
    • Director of Student Services or designee.
