Department Description:

Performs skilled work of the journeyman and supervisory level in the repair and maintenance of a variety of school vehicles, and equipment. This class of Automotive Mechanic II is distinguished from the Automotive Mechanic I class by the more difficult mechanical problems and supervisory duties. An incumbent of this class works under the supervision of the Automotive Mechanic Foreman I/II using independent judgment as to the method of repair after receiving oral instructions or written work orders as to the nature of the job. Supervision is exercised over lower grade positions.

This is a ACE/AFSCME, Local 2250 Position - Pay Table 200 - Grade 18

Hourly Range: $22.28 - $43.0829.47 (external candidates may not be placed above Step 6 $26.67 due to contractual requirements)

Detailed Description:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
  • Does repair maintenance work on school system vehicles and equipment;
  • Conducts vehicle safety and preventive maintenance inspections;
  • Replaces and/or repairs valves, pistons and main bearings and assembles cooling, fuel, ignition and exhaust systems;
  • Inspects, adjusts, repairs, and reconditions brakes, differentials, transmissions, front and rear axle assemblies;
  • Performs diagnostics and tunes electronic controlled gasoline and diesel engines using diagnostic equipment;
  • Responds to service and accident calls on disabled and damaged school system vehicles and equipment; makes minor adjustments and repairs, or tows or has the vehicle towed to a school maintenance facility or vendor;
  • Trains and supervises Automotive Mechanics I, Automotive Attendants, and Trades Helpers;
  • Maintains a clean, organized and productive work area;
  • Maintains inventory and work orders procedures using a computerized system;
  • Keeps employees informed of all department related activities, procedures and policies; and
  • Performs related work as required.


  • Job Requirements:

    The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
  • Thorough knowledge of the repair, preventive maintenance practices and tools of the skilled automotive trade;
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles, repair and operation of gasoline and diesel engines;
  • Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade; ability to give, understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions;
  • Ability to make mathematical computations and tabulations;
  • Ability to plan, layout, manage and supervise the work of lower grade departmental positions;
  • Ability to work out-of-doors, coping with the varying climate conditions; and
  • Possess a high level of mechanical aptitude; be in good physical condition with the ability to pass a Department of Transportation (DOT) physical examination.

  • EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

    High school graduate supplemented by completion of a recognized apprenticeship in the trade with considerable experience as a journeyman; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

    CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

    Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Certification are strongly encouraged and preferred for consideration at this journeyman level; possession of an appropriate and valid Maryland Motor Vehicle Operator's License (Commercial Driver's license with Air Brake & Passenger Endorsement - restricted Class A required) with a driving record indicating five (5) or fewer current points, of which no more than three (3) shall have been accumulated as a result of traffic violations occurring while operating a Board of Education vehicle.     SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Supervises and instructs Automotive Mechanics I, Automotive Attendants and Trades Helpers.

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, talk, hear, walk, sit, and use fingers, tools or controls. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, the ability to adjust focus, and depth perception. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs.
