Our Essex Elementary School is seeking an experienced individual to serve as Head Start instructional assistant from 7:45 AM to 11:45 AM beginning with the 2018-19 school year.

The Head Start Instructional Assistant portion of the position shall work in an outcomes-oriented, team environment under the supervision of the Head Start County Supervisor. The position summary is provided below:
- Ensure program compliance with Head Start Federal Performance Standards, Vermont Child Care Licensing regulations, as well as all other applicable regulations, best practices, and Agency and program policies and procedures.
- Maintain the highest standards of diplomacy and professionalism, in all settings within and outside of the Champlain Valley Office of Economic Opportunity (CVOEO), in representing CVOEO, Champlain Valley Head Start (CVHS), and Head Start children and families.
- Exercise good judgment in all situations.

Summary of Essential Job Functions of the Head Start Instructional Assistant include the following:
- Serve as classroom teacher assistant for assigned program option site.
- Provide and maintain safe, healthy, friendly, and developmentally appropriate environments for preschool children.
- Support the classroom team to maintain the site in compliance with Head Start Performance Standards and Vermont Child Care Licensing Regulations, including daily set up and clean-up of classroom in order to maintain a healthy environment.
- Together, with the classroom team, follow the CVHS Active Supervision of Children Protocol.
- Support the food service program by sharing responsibility of transporting the food to the classroom from the vendor.
- Attend staff meetings as scheduled and individual meetings with supervisor.
- Assist in planning and implementing CVHS curriculum, lesson plans and services in order to provide a developmentally appropriate educational program.
- Assist teachers in documenting observations to inform ongoing child assessments.
- Utilize principles based upon the Early Multi-Tiered System of Supports (EMTSS) promoting positive interactions with children.
- Assist in conducting required health and developmental screenings.
- Assist the team in supporting health and safety practices to include tooth brushing, hand washing and other personal and self-care tasks.
- Work with the classroom team in planning and implementing regular parent committee meetings and family gatherings to promote classroom community and provide opportunities for parent participation.
- Meet monthly with supervisor to review assignments and priorities, and discuss performance. Submit all required paperwork, electronic submissions and documentation to supervisor as required.
- Participate in active and ongoing Head Start child and family recruitment efforts.
- Participate in scheduled planning meetings with co-workers whenever possible in order to create a developmentally and individually appropriate curriculum and coordinate services for children and families.
- Perform all other related duties as assigned.

We are seeking candidates with the following qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in psychology, Early Childhood Education, Special Education or related field, plus 1 to 2 years of relevant experience preferred.
- Knowledge and experience in developmentally appropriate early childhood practice, child behavior management and a team approach in early education settings.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills required; bilingual abilities are a plus.
- Also required are excellent verbal and written communication and organizational skills, as well as skills in documentation, record-keeping and computer applications such as Word, email and internet.
- Must be able to develop and maintain strong, cooperative relationships with parents, staff, collaborative and community partners.
- A commitment to social justice, to working with families with limited resources, and to maintaining client confidentiality is necessary.
- Must be skilled in following precise instructions and meeting deadlines, and must possess abilities to prioritize and handle multiple tasks.
- Must be energetic, positive, mature, professional, diplomatic, motivated, have a "can-do, extra-mile" attitude and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Valid driver's license, clean driving record, and reliable personal means of transportation required.
- Willingness and ability to work occasional evenings and weekends, and to perform other duties as assigned in order to meet program goals and objectives.
- Ability to uphold safety standards.

The position pays $15.79/hour.

Essex Elementary School is a prekindergarten through grade 2 facility housing approximately 400 students. It is located on Bixby Hill Road in Essex.
