The High School (HS) Social Science Specialist provides district-wide supports and guidance on social science curriculum, instruction, assessment and intervention for all students in grades 9-12. Candidates should have experience in teaching; designing and building curriculum; developing assessments and analyzing student performance data; designing, organizing and leading professional learning experiences for instructional leaders and teachers. The Specialist will develop and maintain relationships with vital external partners to strengthen the instructional and pedagogical expertise of instructional leaders and teachers.

The HS Social Science Specialist will be expected to collaborate with the PreK-8 Literacy Specialist(s), support/manage projects and work collaboratively with varied stakeholders to ensure articulation in social science teaching and learning from grades PK through 12.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Contribute to and support the realization of the district-wide teaching and learning vision for high school social science

  • Develop and evaluate standards-aligned curricular resources, including assessments

  • Design, differentiate and facilitate professional learning for high school teachers, instructional leaders, including principals, based on network needs and recommendations from the Chief of Schools

  • Research, evaluate, and communicate recommendations on teaching and learning at the high school level (instructional materials, effective pedagogy, technology integration, policy guidance, etc.)

  • Support school teams in implementing the strategies outlined in their Continuous Improvement Work Plan (CIWP) to drive student growth and achievement

  • Provide differentiated instructional support in a portfolio of schools by:

    • working directly with teachers to model and support the use of effective, research-based instructional practices that are guided by data/evidence

    • collaborating with teams (departments, ILTs, etc.) to drive data-informed instructional planning and be accountable for targeted outcomes

    • partnering with school-based leadership teams to meet school, network, and district goals

  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with external social science partners

  • Collaborate within the Office of Teaching and Learning and other central and network-level offices to ensure alignment of school and network initiatives to district priorities

  • Communicate with clarity the agreed-upon strategies, norms, policies and protocols for supporting networks and schools



Type of Education Required :

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four-year college or university in a relevant field of study

  • Master's degree in Social Science, Education, or related field preferred

  • Valid Professional Educator License (Type 03, Type 09, Type 10) issued by the Illinois State Board of Education with appropriate grade level and content level endorsement

  • State of Illinois General Administrative Certificate (Type 75) preferred



Type of Experience and Number of Years :

  • A minimum of 5 years of high school social science teaching experience

  • Demonstrated experience as a teacher leader required

  • A minimum of 3 years design, facilitation and evaluation of professional learning



Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :

  • Expertise in the Illinois Learning Standards for Social Science

  • Expertise in research-based social science instructional practices and pedagogy

  • Ability to design and lead engaging adult professional learning experiences

  • Ability to define problems, analyze data and develop action plans as part of a continuous improvement cycle

  • Knowledge of PSAT/SAT

  • Ability to drive and maintain high standards of performance

  • Understanding of Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS)

  • Commitment to continuous improvement

  • Proven track record of success and a clear focus on results

  • Excellent written, and oral communication skills, including presentation skills

  • Excellent technology skills

  • Experience managing multiple projects and/or complex work streams simultaneously

  • Knowledge of critical issues in urban education

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with a wide variety of stakeholders

  • Knowledge of research-based school improvement models

  • Experience with curriculum mapping, unit planning, and formative progress monitoring



Residency Requirement :

As a condition of employment with the Chicago Public Schools (CPS), employees are required to live within the geographic boundaries of the City of Chicago within six months of his or her CPS hire date and maintain residency throughout their employment with the district.
