Department Description:

Under general supervision, establishes and maintains information concerning bus routes and bus stop locations for students transported by the county school system. Work involves revising bus routes to respond to changes in student addresses, withdrawals, transfers or new school enrollments; and coordinating with parents, schools, bus lot foreman and other Transportation Department staff members to maximize the efficiency, effectiveness and safety of the transportation operation.

This is a ACE/AFSCME, Local 2250 Position - Pay Table 700 - Grade 19

Hourly Range: $21.59 - $42.05 (external candidates may not be placed above Step 6 $28.68 due to contractual requirements)

Detailed Description:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
  • Revises bus routes to accommodate changes in student addresses transfers, withdrawals, or new enrollments;
  • Uses computerized maps of school, bus lots, bus stops and student addresses to coordinate school bus routes with staggered school operating hours;
  • Updates computerized street maps in response to new construction or changes in traffic restrictions such as no left turns or one way streets;
  • Updates student resident locations, the location and seating capacity of all school buses, the operating hours of all schools, and the special needs of students;
  • Participates in major routing reorganizations, especially during the summer months;
  • Prints drivers run sheets;
  • Notifies schools of r outing changes that affect their students;
  • Investigates the cause of routing issues such as buses being chronically late or overloaded and establishes the routing adjustments needed to solve the problem;
  • Performs reasonably complex analytical tasks associated with understanding the transportation effects created by the opening of new schools or changes in transportation policies;
  • Continues to expand knowledge of the computer-assisted routing software; and
  • Perform related duties as assigned.


  • Job Requirements:

    The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
  • Good knowledge of the local street and road system;
  • Good knowledge of county policies and procedures;
  • Ability to read and follow a road map;
  • Basic knowledge of the Microsoft Windows operating system and the ability to learn and become proficient with computer assisted routing software;
  • Good knowledge of school bus routing strategies and the ability to plan efficient bus routes;
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing;
  • Ability to pass the skills assessment exam; and
  • Skill in keyboarding.

  • EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS:

    High School graduate, with prior experience creating bus driver run sheets preferred; bus driver experience desirable; or any equivalent combination of applicable education, training and experience that provide the knowledge, abilities and skills necessary to do the job.

    CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

    None required.

    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

    No direct supervisory responsibilities.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally push or lift up to 25 lbs.
