Reports to: Director of Secondary Education

Summary of Position:
Provide leadership to all aspects of the district's secondary mathematics program. Develop, coordinate and deliver professional development and related services to grade 6-12 mathematics teachers, principals and other school and district staff. Build capacity with school leadership teams and teachers across content areas to incorporate proven instructional practices to promote high levels of numeracy and mathematical fluency among all student groups. Facilitate implementation of mathematics curriculum and ensure equitable access to mathematics instructional materials. This person will report to the Director of Secondary Education and will be assigned to an Associate Superintendent's portfolio of schools.

Qualifications:
Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Math or similar qualification.
  • Advanced degree in education or educational leadership (preferred but not required).
  • Valid Minnesota teaching license in 5-12 or 7-12 Mathematics or equivalent.
  • A minimum of five years of classroom teaching experience with evidence of culturally responsive pedagogy teaching culturally, linguistically, ethnically diverse students.

Experience
  • A track record of leading students to make significant academic gains (more than a year's growth in a year's time).
  • Demonstrated effective leadership and coaching skills in working with adults.
  • Experience with culturally responsive curriculum development, analysis and delivery using effective formative assessment strategies.
  • Experience planning, facilitating, and evaluating high-quality professional development.
  • Demonstrated leadership and a proven track record of literacy integration across disciplines i.e. ELA, science, social studies, arts, etc.

  • Knowledge of research and best practices in mathematics instruction.
  • A working knowledge of Social Emotional Learning (SEL) pedagogy and how it intersects with academics.
  • Knowledge of the K-12 MN Mathematics Standards, including the 6-12 Literacy Standards in ELA, Science, Social Studies, and the Technical Subjects.
  • Capacity to develop, articulate, and carry through a vision for secondary math instruction.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and creatively with colleagues.
  • Knowledge of and an ability to utilize a variety of current technological tools and student data platforms for communication, planning, and documentation.
  • Ability to synthesize ideas, communicate clearly and succinctly, and design strategies for communicating effectively with internal and external audiences.

Position Functions, Duties, Responsibilities:
  • Implement strategies that reduce/eliminate racial disparities in student outcome and course enrollments.
  • Support implementation of the Minneapolis Public School's core educational program in secondary mathematics instruction, including instructional models which ensure integration of reading, writing, speaking, and listening across content areas.
  • Ensure that strategies for specific students, including English learner support, Special Education services, and advanced learner support are integrated seamlessly into secondary core curriculum and professional development.
  • Maintain secondary math course catalog to ensure viable graduation pathways.
  • Ensure alignment of mathematics curricula, instructional practices, and assessments with the Minnesota academic standards.
  • Lead teams of teachers in developing, vetting, and revising integrated units of study and interim and formative assessments.
  • Lead process of creating/adopting instructional materials which support standards-based teaching and learning and integration of math and content.
  • Design and lead professional development on mathematics curriculum, instruction, and assessment for school leaders and teachers.
  • Build the capacity of school leadership teams to support continuous improvement in teaching and learning at the site.
  • Assume other duties and responsibilities as assigned. There may be times when required to work outside normal business hours and work extended hours to accomplish requirements of the position.
