    PRIMARY PURPOSE:

    To ensure high quality instruction linked to State Standards and District strategic goals.

    To provide a rigorous academic environment that actively engages students; incorporates best educational practices; creates an inclusive environment that celebrates diversity and addresses the needs of all learners and supports the social/emotional development of the students.

    QUALIFICATIONS:
    • Holds a minimum of a bachelor's degree from an accredited university
    • Meets all current licensing requirements including endorsement(s) in the appropriate teaching areas, as determined by the Illinois State Board of Education

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
    1. Planning/Preparation
      1. Demonstrates content knowledge and pedagogy in the discipline, subjects, concepts, relationships and methods
      2. Demonstrates knowledge of students, particularly the typical developmental characteristics of age group assigned
      3. Sets instructional outcomes based upon the district-established targets, best practice and State Standards and clearly articulates those outcomes
      4. Demonstrates knowledge of resources to enhance content and pedagogical knowledge
      5. Designs coherent instruction that is aligned with instructional outcomes and are cognitively challenging and differentiated for groups of students based on learning profiles
      6. Designs student assessment aligned to the instructional learning goals and differentiated for individual or groups of students based on learning profile
    2. Classroom Environment
      1. Creates an environment of respect and rapport that is cultivated in a caring and respectful manner
      2. Establishes a culture of learning with high expectations of all students
      3. Manages classroom procedures in an established culture of engagement and independence
      4. Manages student behavior through effective implementation of classroom standards and clear expectations that align with the building's behavioral system
      5. Organizing physical space in such a way that the classroom is safe and students have equal access to learning activities
    3. Instruction
      1. Communicates with students using clear, audible and legible language that is scaffolded, accurate and suitable to the students' age and interests
      2. Uses questioning and discussion techniques to successfully elicit understanding and discussion among students
      3. Engage students in learning through instructional strategies that intellectually engages groups of students using materials and resources to deliver instruction
      4. Uses assessment to drive instructional decision-making and provide students with meaningful, equitable and accurate feedback
      5. Demonstrates flexibility and responsiveness by making adjustments or accommodations to lessons based on student questions and interests
    4. Professional Responsibilities
      1. Reflects on teaching in order to improve instruction on a consistent basis
      2. Maintains accurate records consistent with school and district policies and procedures
      3. Communicates with families about student progress in a timely manner in order to engage families in the instructional program and in a fashion that demonstrates respect for cultural norms
      4. Participates in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) and contributes to the school and district by attending meetings and serving on committees
      5. Grow and develops professionally by seeking out professional development opportunities to enhance pedagogical skill as well as looks for ways to contribute to the profession
      6. Demonstrates professionalism in all areas by displaying integrity and ethical conduct in behavior, attire and communications
      7. Arrives to work on time and demonstrates consistent attendance to ensure continuity of instruction

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
    • Endurance within a classroom setting; working with students while standing, sitting or walking throughout the classroom, building or outside with the ability to maneuver within tight spaces and to move swiftly
    • Working with students in an instructional setting may entail kneeling or squatting, stooping and bending from the waist on occasional to frequent basis on a given day
    • Retrieve, use, lift and store teaching materials, including books, equipment, assignments, etc.
    • Ability to see, hear and comprehend directions provided in the English language. Ability to speak and write in the English language, in order to communicate to children and others in the school community
    • Ability to use instructional aids such as whiteboards, posters, bulletin boards, document cameras, computer and technological equipment

    CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

    Established by the District calendar, Board of Education policy, the Agreement between the Board of Education and WNTA and any memorandums of agreement or understanding agreed upon between the WNTA and Superintendent and school law pertaining to certified personnel.

    EVALUATION:

    Performance is evaluated by the Principal or Designee in accordance with Board of Education Policy and the West Northfield School District 31 Certified Staff Performance Appraisal Process.
