Job Title: Nurse Elementary

Primary Purpose

Implements comprehensive program of health services for campus. Provides health services and
screenings to students. Promotes health/safety education and preventive health practices for students.
Extends health services to faculty and staff as time permits.

Qualifications
Education/Certification
Valid Texas registered nurse license or valid compact state license
Maintains current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS)

Upon employment, seeks and maintains certification in audiometric, vision, and Acanthosis Nigricans
screening from the Texas Department of State Health Services

Special Knowledge/Skills
• Application of the nursing process in the delivery of comprehensive nursing care that

promotes each student's optimal level of wellness and educational performance
• Strong organization, communication and interpersonal skills

Experience
Two years Registered Nurse experience

Special Requirement
Within ten working days of initial assignment, begins hepatitis B immunization series, or
submits a statement of declination, or provides proof of previous immunization and/or blood titer
levels indicating immunity.

MAJOR RESPONSIBLITIES AND DUTIES

1. Practices within the defined limits of the Texas Nurse Practice Act, the American Nurses Association

Standards of Clinical Nursing practice, and the "Scope and Standards Practice-School Nursing",
National Association of School Nurses.

2. Complies with Texas Department of State Health Services regulations, EPISD policies and EPISD
Health Services Department policies, procedures and protocols.

3. Performs physical screening procedures as required by the Texas Department of State Health
Services, Texas Education Agency and District policies, i.e., vision/hearing and scoliosis, etc. Makes
appropriate referrals as necessary.

4. Serves as health advocate for the student.
5. Provides acute, urgent and emergency care for sick and injured students or employees according to

District policies and Health Services Department Procedures Manual.(Delete Manual)
6. Notifies parent of accident or illness and secures medical care for students in emergency cases if

parents or emergency contact cannot be reached.
7. Serves as a health liaison between school, physician, parents, and community.
8. Assesses student healthcare issues, implements the nursing process, and makes appropriate referrals,

working with students, teachers, parents/guardians, family physicians and other community health
providers as needed.

9. Coordinates a system of administration and management of medications given at school
10. Administers medications according to District policy and procedures.

11. Performs special procedures according to physician orders and Health Services Department Procedure
Manual.

12. Reviews, evaluates, documents and maintains students' immunizations records.
13. Documents and maintains complete and accurate student healthcare and office records.
14. Submits timely reports as requested by the Director, Health Services Department.
15. Maintains adequate supplies in the health office.
16. Reports potential school health/safety hazards to the principal.
17. Participates on the 504 and Admission, Review and Dismissal Committee, child abuse investigations,

and other school committees as required.
18. Promotes wellness and provides information to facilitate healthy life styles among students and

employees.
19. Provides health counseling and teaching on an individual basis.
20. Contributes to the health education program as a resource person in both planning and teaching

capacities, working with the principal and teachers.
21. Maintains ongoing communication with principal and Director, Health Services Department regarding

health problems and related matters.
22. Supervises and reinforces the LVN, paraprofessional and volunteer training in school health office

procedures and responsibilities according to District policy.
23. Participates in staff development meetings, vertical team meetings, and professional growth activities.

Supervisory Responsibilities
Supervises LVNs, paraprofessionals, or volunteers.

Thermometer, blood pressure cuff, automatic external defibrillator, audiometer, scoliometer, otoscope,
glucometer, stethoscope, vision screening equipment, suctioning apparatus, enteral feeding equipment,
ostomy equipment, catheterization equipment, basic clinic equipment, personal computer.

Working Conditions
Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors

Maintains emotional control under stress; frequent interruptions, occasional district travel. Exposure to
communicable diseases, bacterial and viral. Moderate (< 44 lbs) lifting and carrying. Frequent
standing, walking, bending, kneeling, pulling, pushing, and reaching. Occasional stair climbing. Must
be able to lift up to 40 pounds.

Terms of Employment
185 days; salary to be established by the Board of Trustees
