Position: Stipend Opportunity: Model Curriculum Units (MCUs) Curriculum Writers (10 positions)
Reports to: Instructional Team
Position Duration: School year 2017- 2018 (August 2018)
Location: Bolling Building Central Office
Stipend: Flat rate of $1200

Position overview:
The Office of English Learners (OEL) is seeking ESL certified and/or SEI endorsed educators with experience in developing Model Curriculum Units (MCUs) for our K-12 ESL/SEI classrooms. Candidates with experience writing/developing curriculum and/or experiences in teaching the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education ESL MCUs for English Learners will meet for one week from August 13th through 17th on creating ESL MCUs for grades K - 12. Educators will be compensated a total of 30 hours of work at $40/ per hour.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Write ESL MCUs for English Learners participating in English Language Development.
  • Work collaboratively with other teachers to identify appropriate materials for culturally and linguistically diverse learners.
  • Develop ESL units focusing on systematic, explicit, and sustained language development within the context of the key academic practices of the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks.
  • Write ESL MCUs that are organized around WIDA's Key Uses of Academic Language, taking a functional approach to language teaching.
  • Provide to OEL two final Curriculum Units ready to be implemented in the classrooms

EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Currently teaching in Boston Public Schools
  • Bachelor's degree
  • A valid Massachusetts Teaching License for appropriate grade level span
  • A valid Massachusetts grade-level appropriate ESL License and/or SEI endorsement.
  • Knowledge of WIDA frameworks, Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks and Common Core State Standards
  • Current authorization to work in the United States - Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment.

QUALIFICATIONS - PREFERRED:
  • Experience teaching ESL or in an SEI classroom
  • Knowledge of child development and latest educational theories and practices
  • Experience writing and developing ESL Curriculum using the DESE MCU template
