SUMMARY OF ASSIGNMENTS:

Recognized for excellence, Spokane Public Schools is seeking outstanding Principal's Assistant candidates. Spokane Public Schools is looking for individuals who are service-oriented, kind and compassionate in their work with others, and continually strive to improve themselves and their practice. To that end, we want candidates who demonstrate the ability to build relationships, be a strong instructional leader, strive for results, manage people and have a deep understanding of organizational management.

The Principal's Assistant position is a special assignment position for certificated staff who wish to obtain administrative experience.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Although the Principal's Assistant will support the Principal in many aspects of school leadership, the primary responsibilities will be to:
  • Provide leadership, supervision, and evaluation of the instructional program for the school.
  • Lead staff, students, and the community in development and implementation of building-level goals related to cultural competency and student learning.
  • Establish a school climate, which promotes equal opportunities for students, good conduct, and positive attitudes and values, and accept responsibility for the attendance, conduct, health, and safety of students.
  • Participate in the screening, selection, orientation, training, assignment, and reassignment of school staff.
  • Record, monitor, and analyze student discipline data. Recognize disproportionality when it exists, and implement effective strategies to address inequities.
  • Assist in coordinating the school's extracurricular program.
  • Provide for effective staff communication - collaborate and resolve conflicts with others.
  • Be a contributing, effective member of the school and district leadership teams.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.


QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. A Washington State principals' credential, or the ability to obtain one.
  2. Five years successful credentialed experiences.
  3. Demonstrated understanding of effective instruction, assessment, and culturally responsive practices.
  4. Demonstrated success in leading the improvement of student learning.
  5. Demonstrated ability in developing and implementing a school-wide discipline plan to ensure that positive, preventative, and restorative practices are implemented with cultural sensitivity and equitable application.
  6. Demonstrated understanding of the change process and its relationship to current trends in current elementary education.
  7. Demonstrated effectiveness in planning, scheduling, and allocating resources, reaching logical conclusions and making high-quality decisions using appropriate decision-making processes, and accepting responsibility for actions and consequences.
  8. Demonstrated effectiveness in using computer technologies to enhance instruction and to manage building functions.
  9. Demonstrated ability to foster an environment that focuses on quality results while motivating, developing, and supporting a diverse staff, encouraging continuous improvement, and working effectively as a member of a diverse team.
  10. Demonstrated commitment and ability to continue one's own lifelong learning, to develop talent and leadership skills in others, to provide critical feedback, and to receive critical feedback in order to maintain high standards for one's self and the organization.
  11. The ability and desire to establish positive relationships with persons regardless of race, gender, physical limitation, sexual orientation, or religious belief, with an active commitment to equal opportunity for all persons.
  12. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in both written and verbal form with the ability to make clear, persuasive and engaging presentations to diverse groups.

  14. Demonstrated strong work ethic and ability to work outside regular office hours as needed to accomplish tasks, provide support to building administrators, provide staff development, or meet with other constituents.
  15. Ability to develop budgets and manage fiscal resources.
  16. Knowledge of teacher evaluation and demonstrated ability to apply this knowledge in K-12 public schools.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:
  • WORK YEAR: Certificated employees are contracted for a 180-day work year for a full year contract.
  • BENEFITS: Fringe benefits for employees .5 or greater FTE include medical, dental, vision, basic life insurance, and long-term disability coverage are provided for employees who work at least half-time or more in a regular position. In addition, employees have access to a variety of optional benefits through payroll deduction.
  • SITE GOVERNANCE: Completion of transfer, reassignment to another location, change of position, promotion, or new hire is contingent upon the individual's agreement to sign the charter and any variances which may exist at the site and agreement to work within the framework of any covenant and principles of learning as determined by the site.
  • ASSOCIATION MEMBERSHIP: Pursuant to the collective bargaining agreement between Spokane Public Schools and the Spokane Education Association, a newly-elected employee must either become a member of the association, pay an equivalent representation fee, or based on a bona fide religious objections, pay an equivalent amount to a nonreligious charity mutually agreed upon by the employee and the association.
  • OTHER WORKING CONDITIONS as negotiated between Spokane Public Schools and the Spokane Education Association (SEA).
