Job Title: Assistant Headmaster - Professional Learning
Reports to: Headmaster
Terms: BASAS 10B, 211 days

General Description:
With guidance from the Headmaster and Administrative Team, the Assistant Headmaster will co-facilitate Professional Learning at the John D. O'Bryant School of Mathematics and Science. This work includes facilitating the Instructional Leadership Team and school-wide Professional Development sessions. The Assistant Headmaster will work closely with Lead Teachers to conduct school-wide Learning Walks and Instructional Focus Reviews. The ideal candidate will have an extensive knowledge base and experience with using the Essentials for Instructional Equity, the Massachusetts Standards and Indicators of Effective Teaching Practice: Teacher Rubric, the Quality School Plan, the Data Wise Improvement Process, and researched-based coaching models to support teacher practice. The Assistant Headmaster will also oversee the World Language department. In addition, the Assistant Headmaster will interact with and be available to students, teachers, staff, and families to ensure a safe and welcoming learning community is established.

Responsibilities:
  1. Assist in the supervision of all staff (World Language Department) and assumes the duties of the Principal/Headmaster when he/she is not on the premises.
  2. Implement the Code of Discipline and maintain the safety and security of the building and grounds.
  3. Supervise the arrival and departure of students; supervise the behavior of students in the common areas of the building and grounds.
  4. Seek funding to enhance the cultural and academic programs at the school.
  5. Use data to guide academic goals to assist the Principal/Headmaster in the preparation of Quality School Plan document.
  6. Assist the Headmaster in his/her managerial duties including: a. Supervises maintenance of the building and grounds b. Coordinates purchases and delivery of supplies and equipment c. Supervises maintenance of personnel and student records d. Prepares reports and statistics of school operations e. Prepares and maintains the master schedule within planning parameters established by Principal f. Implements the attendance policy g. Serves as liaison between the school and the transportation providers.
  7. Supervise substitute teachers, including arranging for coverage, ensuring that substitute folders are up to date and available for monitoring and evaluating performance.
  8. Assist the Headmaster in planning activities including coordinating curriculum, instruction, student's, volunteers and parent activities, and student support services.
  9. Engage the wider community to support school goals.
  10. Support the school-wide expectations for teaching and learning, and evaluates teachers.
  11. Assume other related duties as requested by the Principal/Headmaster.
Additional Responsibilities:
  • Ensure curriculum implementation for the whole school
  • Oversee supervision and evaluation of teaching; observes and evaluates teachers; completing evaluations when necessary
  • Work with Administrative Team to ensure that all classrooms are visited regularly
  • Work with teachers on their Individual Professional Development Plans so they are aligned with BPS and school goals and teachers are moving at an acceptable rate toward recertification
  • Oversee teacher induction activities and teacher retention efforts
  • Coordinate school-based content meetings: set agenda/focus, follow up on notes from meetings, and act as the main content facilitator for the whole school
  • Facilitate the Instructional Leadership Team: sets agenda, meets with other facilitators to ensure that meeting notes are recorded and posted for staff, etc.
  • Supervise the work on the Quality School Plan: development, revision, and completion
  • Coordinate and support staff to analyze assessment to inform teaching and learning
  • Coordinate MCAS-related issues: create whole school student database, prepare and administer tests and retests, attend annual training/workshop, coordinate tutoring, pursue MCAS appeals, and analyze and prepare data analysis to improve instruction
  • Set the annual exam schedule for the whole school
  • Coordinate other types of assessments: SAT, PSAT, and AP
  • Disseminate information from BPS core content meetings
  • Plan all professional development for the school in accordance with the Quality School Plan (involves surveying staff, identifying administrative blocks, facilitating coverage for demo classes, and working on inquiry topics, etc.)
  • Coordinate other types of teacher professional development including classroom training, effective practices, and curriculum
  • Work with partners to maximize academic services to all students, such as tutoring, mentoring, and after-school and summer enrichment activities
  • Coordinate school-wide administrative team meetings: agendas, follow-through on various deadlines and tasks, etc.
  • Follow-up on the accreditation report
  • Is responsible when the Headmaster is out of the building
  • Coordinate the revision of syllabi for all content areas
  • Coordinate the revision of the O'Bryant Course of Studies
  • Troubleshoot scheduling issues
  • Coordinate student-related activities such as clubs, multicultural show, etc.
  • Work with the school-wide Parent Center to ensure continuous communication with the parents and school community
  • Coordinate the ordering of textbooks and educational supplies through the school budget
  • Coordinates the grant writing team
  • Sit on the Personnel Sub-Committee and actively interviews all candidates for teaching, guidance.
  • Oversee the registrar and guidance services, including scheduling, programming, and college preparation activities
  • Is responsible for other school-wide issues
Qualifications Required:
  1. Masters Degree in Education or related field.
  2. Five (5) years experience successful teaching experience.
  3. Massachusetts license for School Principal/Assistant Principal (grades specific).
  4. Demonstrated leadership qualities, interpersonal skills and personal characteristics necessary for working effectively with students, teachers, administrators and parents.
  5. Ability to establish a multi-cultural atmosphere that enhances individual growth and promotes a positive self-image.
  6. Experience with budget preparation and implementation.
  7. Advanced technology skills
  8. Experience with full process involved in development and implementation of master schedule.
  9. Current authorization to work in the United States - Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment

Preferred:
  1. Teaching experience in a K-12 educational setting.
  2. Experience as a school administrator.
