SUMMARY: Provide assistance in general education preschool classrooms for large groups, small groups and/or individual students with special needs. Assist preschool instructors and special education service providers in working within a variety of preschool settings.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

-Work to assist preschool instructor/ classroom teacher with large and small groups of students.

-Work with students with special needs one on one or in small groups as needed in a variety of preschool settings (classroom, bathroom, playground, etc.)

-Manage classroom behavior effectively in all settings in collaboration with other staff.

-Assist preschool instructor/ classroom teacher and special education service providers in maintaining a clean, healthy and organized environment.

-Assist special needs students on field trips.

-Perform other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING: High school diploma/GED required.

EXPERIENCE: Experienced working with young children preferred.

SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE, & EQUIPMENT: Requires basic language, math and writing skills. Knowledge of general office equipment preferred.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS: CPR/First aid highly recommended.

SUPERVISION/TECHNICAL RESPONSIBILITY: This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

CONTACTS: Daily contact with students to provide a service and with persons in the same work unit or building regarding routine internal matters. Weekly contact with persons in other departments or buildings to furnish or obtain information. Annual contact with parents to furnish or obtain information and maintain relationships.

SAFETY TO SELF AND OTHERS: Low exposure of self to fractured bones from abusive students i.e. punching, kicking, slapping, etc.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to sit. The employee is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 35 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

MENTAL FUNCTIONS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate and use interpersonal skills. Occasionally required to compare, analyze, copy, coordinate, compute, evaluate and negotiate.

JUDGMENT AND DECISION MAKING: Work is assigned by the special education providers and preschool instructor. This position requires ability to make decisions regarding student behavior, and to follow instructions of the teacher and school guidelines. Errors in decision making could lead to improper instructions for students, or improper behavior management of students. Decision making requires collaboration with the special education service providers and regular classroom teacher. Work is guided by students' individualized educational plan, daily lesson plans, District policies, school policies and department procedures.

DIVERSITY OF DUTIES: Duties require cross training in student behavior management. This position requires communication skills, ability to work with groups of students and ability to work independently.
