POSITION SUMMARY:
The Project Manager I (Environmental Services & Sustainability) ensures the planning, organization and implementation of healthy, environmentally sustainable and efficient operations for all Atlanta Public Schools sites and facilities; supports sustainable development and environmental improvements; compile and analyze data, prepare reports and communications relative to environmental health and safety (e.g. air, land and water quality), AHERA Program Management, hazardous materials, solid waste diversion and recycling, and school garden sites. Works across various district departments and school sites to engage all APS Stakeholders.

The Project Manager I (Environmental Services & Sustainability) ensures the planning, organization and implementation of healthy, environmentally sustainable and efficient operations for all Atlanta Public Schools sites and facilities; supports sustainable development and environmental improvements; compile and analyze data, prepare reports and communications relative to environmental health and safety (e.g. air, land and water quality), AHERA Program Management, hazardous materials, solid waste diversion and recycling, and school garden sites. Works across various district departments and school sites to engage all APS Stakeholders.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
- Interprets, applies and enforces School Board Policies related to maintaining Federal (EPA and AHERA Management), State (EPD), and local environmental quality and regulatory standards for District owned facilities and sites. Includes remediation of environmental contamination and hazardous materials.
- Develops and implements districtwide Environmental and Sustainability Programming.
- Supervises work of outside contractors involved in testing and abatement/remediation of hazardous materials. Work to ensure that contracted services' contract language reflects expectations for sustainable facility maintenance and operations.
- Supports design and construction of APS Facilities, such as mold prevention and remediation efforts, AHERA Abatement Programing, solid waste diversion/recycling support and planning, science laboratory chemical storage, and environmental site assessment.
- Identifies opportunities for ecological sustainability and environmental improvements for the district's Capital Improvement Projects; raise awareness of the potential impact of sustainable development from emerging legislation or best practices in social responsibility.
- Assists with the development and delivery of SPLOST Projects to help achieve and create sustainable green building operations, components and educational outreach opportunities; ensure compliance with waste diversion and conservation, environmental quality and pollutant control.
- Assists with APS Communications for the development of sustainability efforts throughout district and to external stakeholders.
- Engages students, teachers, and school administrators in environmental practices and behavior change; supports schools with the development of curriculum, activities and special programs that expand opportunities for our students.
- Develops and implements long and short-term planning; directs preparation and maintenance of narrative and statistical reports, record, correspondence and files related to environmental and sustainable services, activities and operations.
- Develops training programming via presentations and training sessions for APS Staff including Facilities Services AHERA Management Training and C&I Science Department training and outreach for storage, maintenance and disposal of the science laboratory chemicals.
- Performs other duties as assigned by appropriate administrator.
- Required to attend scheduled shift during regular business hours as mandated.
Knowledge of:
- Energy, environmental and sustainability laws, principles, industry practices and emerging concepts;
- Funding opportunities for sustainability initiatives;
- Project budget preparation and management, and District organization, operations and objectives.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Programming;
- Ability to work, coordinate and communicate within all levels of Atlanta Public Schools Departments and Divisions.
- Manage multifaceted projects resulting in cost and time efficiency;
- Gather, interpret and analyze statistical data;
- Work collaboratively, analytically, and creatively to achieve district goals and objectives;
- Conduct meetings and make effective presentations;
- Interpret, apply and explain rules, regulations, policies and procedures to adopt an effective course of action;
- Plan and organize work to meet schedules and deadlines; prepare comprehensive narrative and statistical reports.
Requirements: EDUCATION:
- Bachelor's degree required in engineering, environmental sciences, or related field.
- Valid driver's license and availability of private transportation.
- Certification in any one of the following:
- OSHA HAZWOPER- 40 Hour,
- Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM),
- Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Accredited Professional (LEED AP), or
- Equivalent professional certification.
- Five (5) years related work experience.
