About the opportunity:

DECA is looking for a Chief Education Officer (CEdO) to lead the organization's efforts in the creation of educational content and resources provided to its participants.  The CEdO will serve as a member of the senior leadership team and will plan, direct, and evaluate DECA’s initiatives in professional development, academic competitive events, and student educational content at the high school and collegiate level.  The CEdO will be responsible for utilizing research and data-driven methods in the design, implementation, and evaluation of educational offerings, including but not limited to in-person conferences, synchronous/asynchronous e-learning, and written resources. In addition, the CEdO will represent DECA with external entities to help accomplish the mission of the organization. This is a new position, created by the recently appointed Executive Director, designed to provide the opportunity for a talented leader in the educational space to help define success for this position and develop strategies to achieve that success.

Job responsibilities:

  • Lead a staff team of 4 FTEs accountable for overall planning, implementation, and effectiveness of professional development and educational strategies and initiatives, which currently includes five conferences that include professional development activities
  • Liaise and collaborate with volunteer task forces and committees assigned to evaluate and improve existing programs
  • Oversee and direct all activities related to planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of academic competitive events
  • Collaborate with the Marketing and Communications Department to promote professional development activities
  • Establish high levels of quality, accuracy, and process consistency
  • Ensure ongoing compliance and maintenance of DECA Policies and Procedures and other external requirements and guidelines
  • Establish, direct, and maintain a learning management system that ensures effective learning outcomes
  • Ensure that DECA maintains its status with national certification/credentialing organizations and identify new certification opportunities
  • Identify changes in the learning and professional development environments and evaluate and adjust the departmental plans and processes accordingly
  • Develop and oversee the learning section of the website
  • Foster a culture and framework of innovation and excellence
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate the departmental budget
  • Collaborate with senior staff on various strategic initiatives
  • Identify and implement new technologies and methodologies

Desired skills:

  • At least 10 years progressive experience in education, professional development, and e-learning
  • At least 5 years of experience in a strategic leadership role
  • Data driven, systems thinker who can generate and execute ideas at strategic and tactical levels
  • Thrives in a fast‐paced environment, integrating disparate activities, new technologies, and agendas while adhering to deadlines and budgets
  • Instinctive collaborator with strong staff management experience who values teamwork and the input of others
  • Creative visionary with a passion for learning and professional development and the ability to clearly articulate ideas and concepts
  • Experience with accreditation and certification organization criteria, policies, standards, and processes
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to understand the big picture
  • Experience working with and providing strategic direction to volunteers
  • Excellent written communication skills
  • Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office applications; proficiency in other related technologies
  • Ability to effectively create and manage a department budget
  • Ability to travel as needed
  • Strong interpersonal skills; ability to interact easily with wide variety of people
