Job Summary
The Cafeteria Manager I performs daily tasks to ensure meals are prepared on schedule and according to food safety guidelines in school cafeterias. The manager inspects food deliveries and maintains sanitary conditions in the kitchen, while keeping records of meals provided and following other state and federal requirements. The position has a retirement association with the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS) and is represented by the Teamsters Local 959 Food Service bargaining unit.

Job Requirements
The following are required:
  1. A high school diploma or equivalent.One year of food service experience in the area of general food preparation, proper food handling and safety, sanitation, cashiering, and basic record keeping.Knowledge of the methods, practices, laws, and regulations relating to proper heating and serving of foods in large quantities.Knowledge of nutritional value of different foods.Ability to work and make decisions independently.Ability to plan and organize.Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with students, staff, supervisors, other Anchorage School District personnel, and the public.Must be proficient in basic math such as addition, subtraction, and multiplication.Ability to keep accurate records and prepare written reports.Must have or obtain a current Anchorage Municipality Food Worker's Card within 15 calendar days of hire.Must attend the eight-hour ASD Serving It Safe food safety course and pass the associated examination.Must attend the Advanced Sanitation course and pass the associated examination.

The following are preferred:
  1. Knowledge of pre-plate and centralized food preparation and delivery.Previous school food service experience as sub-manager or manager.

Essential Job Functions
  1. Reports to school office upon arrival to pick up cash box, envelopes, keys, and any other related materials/information pertaining to cafeteria operation.Performs daily routine tasks to ensure that lunches are prepared on schedule for an estimated number of students in the unit.Inspects daily food and milk deliveries.Checks ovens, milk coolers, refrigerators, freezers, and other equipment for proper temperatures. Reports any service problems to Student Nutrition office.Reviews food delivery to assure proper quantity for the day's meal service. If delivery is insufficient for the daily count, makes appropriate corrections from frozen food supply.Performs any necessary cleaning and sanitation tasks prior to food preparation.Assures that regulations pertaining to sanitation and food safety practices are observed and maintained.Performs daily start up record keeping involving ticket sales.Resolves routine complaints regarding meals served. Refers major issues to higher levels of authority.Washes fruit and pans, heats and serves food.Monitors proper food heating times and temperatures to within the safety zone.Adheres to state and federal point of meal service requirements.Adheres to any department and district practices and procedures.Responsible for monthly food and supply inventories, food orders, production records, cash on hand, bank deposits, and timely submission of any required paperwork to the Student Nutrition office.Sells lunch and milk tickets and acts as a cashier.Maintains accurate records of free, reduced, and charged lunches in accordance with department procedures and government requirements.Assigns and directs student aides as applicable.Assures that cash receipts are properly balanced and transmitted.

Physical/Mental Demands
The physical demands of this job require frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking, and hearing. Specific visual abilities are also required. The employee is regularly required to reach with his/her hands and arms and occasionally lift items weighing less than 40 lbs. Additionally, the employee must be able to communicate by oral and written means in an appropriate business manner and have cognitive skills to understand instructions, readily recall facts and details, handle conflict, and make effective decisions under pressure. The employee must have the ability to effectively manage the stress of working with students, parents, and other employees representing diverse cultures, personalities, and work styles in a dynamic work environment.

While performing the duties of this job the employee may be regularly exposed to a video display. The employee may be exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
