ROLE SUMMARY: Middle school teachers hold primary responsibility for the implementation and development of Amani Public Charter School’s curriculum and the success of its students. Therefore, Amani  seeks middle school teachers who are committed to continuously improving curriculum and instruction through collaboration as part of a grade level team.

 

 

 

SPECIFICS TO THE ROLE:

 

This position involves teaching Latin 1A and 1B in 7th and 8th grade. We have a well-established and successful program in a diverse school.  At Amani all scholars are required to take Latin in 7th and 8th grade. The teaching of Latin is part of the school’s mission. We use Ecce Romani 1  and Fabulae Graecae. Our students participate in the National Latin Exam and have done very well over the years. The school also has a Latin Club. Students should graduate to the high school understanding the basics of grammar, vocabulary, and ancient Roman culture. They should also love Latin class. We are looking for a creative teacher who can make the program their own while offering an enjoyable curriculum. You will join a motivated staff devoted to teaching the whole child.  The school awards two scholarships yearly to graduating 8th grade students for achievement in Latin. These are the only endowed academic scholarships bestowed by the school.

 

  SPECIFIC DUTIES

 

  • Leading students through lessons in Latin vocabulary and grammar

     

    Working with students on in-class Latin reading, writing, and speaking practice

     

    Assigning Latin reading and writing practice homework

     

    Testing students on their ability to speak, write, and read Latin

     

    Introducing students to classic texts from ancient Rome

     

    Teaching students important aspects of Latin as a language in the history of ancient Rome and evolving European civilization.

     

    Designing the curriculum and creating lesson plans

     

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Implement curricula and activities to meet academic standards;

     

    Design and implement assessments that measure progress towards academic standards;

     

    Use assessment data to refine curriculum and inform instructional practices;

     

    Participate in collaborative curriculum development, grade-level activities, and school-wide functions;

     

    Provide consistent rewards and/or consequences for student behavior;

     

    Accountable for students’ mastery of academic standards;

     

    Communicate effectively with students, families, and colleagues;

     

    Teachers participate in an annual two-week staff orientation and trainings

     


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS    

 

  • Proven track-record of high achievement in the classroom

     

    Mastery of and enthusiasm for academic subjects;

     

    Strong Content Knowledge

     

    Evidence of self-motivation and willingness to be a team player;

     

    Bachelor’s degree is required; Master’s degree is preferred;  

     

    Minimum of two years teaching experience in an urban public school or charter school setting.

     

    By the time that employment begins, candidates must have appropriate certification or
    pathway to completion.
