Assistant Director of School Libraries

TITLE: Assistant Director of School Library Services

LOCATION: TBD

JOB GOAL:

To be an integral part of the administrative team in providing instructional leadership for school library staff. To coordinate library services between Kansas City Kansas Public Schools and Kansas City Kansas Public Libraries.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • Develops a vision of excellence for School Libraries including personnel, resources, facilities and technology for the 21 st century.
  • Continue to expand our effort to strengthen STEM education through the school libraries.
  • Prepares and administers budgets according to the needs and objectives of the program within district policies Works with KCK School District Librarians and KCK Public Library Administrative Staff to obtain subscription online resources that support the district curriculum.
  • Coordinates training and professional development opportunities making connection to the district's guaranteed and viable curriculum for school library staff to best utilize all available resources including existing and emerging technologies.
  • Evaluates the assigned areas of responsibilities for needed improvement in communication and programs, policies, procedures, and staff performance using the goals and objectives set by Director of Libraries and Superintendent of Schools.
  • Prepares recommendations for policy, program, procedure or staff changes to reinforce or improve performance in the area of responsibility.
  • Develops organized plans for implementing approved changes in policy, program, procedure or staff changes. Coordinates with KCK Public Library Technical and Computer Services division in the selection, acquisition, processing, and maintenance of materials and equipment for school libraries.
  • Assists with the development and maintenance of online resource pages and websites for students and staff Collaborates with both school and public library staff on newsletters and monthly reports to promote services and events.
  • Promotes literacy and appreciation of reading through support of district and extra-curricular programs.
  • Lead District Content once per week and all other in-service staff development days that the district sets aside for school personnel development.
  • Attend Library Management team meetings, as well as, District Curricular team meetings.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Valid Kansas teaching certificate.

Valid Master's Degree in Library Science or Master's Degree in Science Educational Technology with Library Media. Licensure from an ALA accredited 4-year institution to be determined by the Director of Libraries.

Comprehensive knowledge of library service concepts, materials, techniques, procedures, and management principals.

Demonstrated ability to efficiently manage the activities of both school and technical services.

Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and to explain and promote library services.

Demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with a diversity of individuals and community groups.

Demonstrated ability to manage and supervise.

Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and solve work-related problems.

Ability to work cooperatively as part of a management team and to collaborate with all departments of the Kansas City Kansas Public Schools and Kansas City Kansas Public Library.

Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to relate and interpret new concepts and technological advances in library services.

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze and interpret information in a variety of formats. Ability to write reports, general curriculum, and correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions to meet the needs of the audience. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, staff, parents, students, and the general public.

COMMUNICATION: Maintains communication with school library staff, other school and library personnel about methods, programs, and procedures to provide excellent library service to school staff and students. Compiles data for statistical purposes with regards to school library services.

While performing the duties of the job the employee occasionally may visit a child's home. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and depth perception.

ORGANIZATION: Maintains a daily log of school/staff visits and documentation. Develops work-related goals and objectives. Utilizes existing technology effectively in the performance of duties. Performs other related work as required.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Attends library-related and school district-related meetings, workshops, in-service programs and events. Develops job-related abilities, skills, and knowledge. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with colleagues, parents, students and community members.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 228 days

SALARY: Based on Kansas City, Kansas Public School Salary Schedule

FLSA STATUS: Exempt

REPORTS TO: Director of Libraries

EVAULATION: Procedures outlined by the USD #500 Board of Education
