Primary Purpose

Plan, implement and evaluate an effective, comprehensive, developmental counseling and
guidance program for students, parents, teachers and staff in the middle school setting.

Qualifications

Education/Certification
Master's Degree
Valid Texas School Counselor Certificate

Experience
Two years teaching experience or counseling experience

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

Instructional and Program Management
1. Provides individual and group counseling to address academic, career, and personal/social/emotional

needs.
2. Contributes, supports and assists with implementation of the District's social emotional learning

(SEL) plan.
3. Assists students interpret required state test scores as well as:TELPAS, CBE. End of Course Exams,

PSAT, TSI and other standardized tests scores.
4. Assists students and parents with career exploration and planning.
5. Helps identify students with special needs and makes proper referrals for services.
6. Assists students with the transition from elementary to middle and from middle and high school.
7. Assists students and parents with developing a high school four-year plan for every eighth-grade

student and identifying a HB5 Endorsement and Program of Study (POS).
8. Reviews students' course selection for correct placement in courses and programs in the College and

Career Readiness Plan (CCRP) and the Academic Achievement Record (AAR).
9. Participates in ARD's.

10. Assists students and parent with college admission information to include: scholarships, grants, Free
Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) middle school course offerings, high school course
offerings, Program of Study (POS), high school graduation plans, magnet school information, early
college high school, Dual Credit, and advanced courses (AP, Pre-AP, IB, IB Prep), Career and
Technical Education (CTE).

11. Participates in establishing and maintaining a positive school climate.
12. Fosters collegiality and team-building among staff.
13. Communicates effectively with students, parents, staff, and community.
14. Plans and aligns collaboratively with elementary and other high school counselors regarding the

transition to middle school from elementary and from middle school to high school to meet academic
student needs.

15. Contributes and supports colleagues in accomplishing the school's mission.

School/Organizational Improvement

16. Identifies, analyzes, and applies research findings to facilitate the delivery of a comprehensive

developmental counseling and guidance program.
17. Develops, maintains, and utilizes appropriate TEAMS information systems and records necessary

(transcripts, cum folders, College and Career Readiness Planner (CCRP) and Program of Study (POS)
for attainment of district guidance goals.

18. Provides student information and assists with decision-making regarding academic, career, and
personal/social/emotional matters at the campus

Administration-Fiscal/Facilities Management
19. Complies with policies established by federal and state laws, State Board of Education rule, and

District Board legal and local, administrator's reference guide and regulation.
20. Manages work activities and resources effectively to accomplish Guidance and Counseling and

District goals.

Student Management
21. Consults with parents, teachers, administrators, and outside agencies to help students and their

families.
22. Reviews and translates transcripts and develops class schedules for all students assigned
23. Attends ARD and Section 504 meetings for caseload, as needed
24. Presents classroom guidance lessons for all grade levels 6th through 8th related to academic, personal

and social/emotional issues.
25. Plans and aligns collaboratively with middle school and high school counselors regarding the

transition from middle school to high school to meet the academic, emotional and social needs of all
students

26. Provides faculty, staff, and students training on recognizing the signs of emotional abuse, physical
abuse, and sexual abuse as well as the requirements for reporting the abuse to the appropriate
authorities.

27. Provides faculty, staff and students training on recognizing the signs of suicidal ideation and protocol
for reporting to the appropriate authorities.

28. Provides, faculty, staff and students training on recognizing the signs of harassment/bullying and teen
dating violence and protocol and intervention.

29. Follows district policy for placing students in the correct grade level.

School/Community Relations
30. Demonstrates awareness of school/community needs and initiates activities to meet those needs.
31. Provides, to parents, information about school policies and procedures, middle school course

offerings, high school offerings, Program of Study (POS), high school graduation plans, magnet
school information, early college high school, Dual Credit, and advanced courses (AP, Pre-AP, IB, IB
Prep), Career and Technical Education (CTE)..

32. Provides information to parents about students' academic records and progress.
33. Informs parents about guidance services available.
34. Coordinates visits for representatives of agencies, businesses, and other community resources.
35. Projects a positive image to the community.

Professional Growth and Development
36. Utilizes performance evaluation results and the appraisal process to improve performance.
37. Improves counseling skills and knowledge through available in-service training and self-initiated

professional training opportunities.
38. Develops and maintains positive working relationships with other school professionals and

representatives of community resources.
39. Participates in professional development to improve skills and knowledge related to job assignment.
40. Adheres to ethical and legal standards and model behavior that is professional and responsible.
41. Reports to the principal, in writing, any identified irregularities found in the student academic records.

Maintains emotional control under stress; occasional prolonged and irregular hours; occasional
districtwide and state travel.
