BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of content, curriculum, methods, materials, and equipment of instructional
specialty (ies) to which assigned; knowledge of adolescent growth and development or, if
applicable, adult learning theory; knowledge of Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS)
curriculum and program of studies related to assignments and public school mission, goals, and
organization; ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional
programs; ability to plan and implement lessons based on Division and school objectives and the
needs and abilities of students to whom assigned; ability to establish and maintain effective
relationships with students, peers, administrators, and parents; skill in oral and written
communications; excellent human relations skills.
If teaching world language, proficiency in oral and written communications in that language; if
teaching choral music, ability to play the piano and to demonstrate proper singing/choral
techniques; if teaching instrumental music classes, proficiency in one or more musical
instruments, and the ability to model proper playing techniques and good tone on all instruments;
for both choral and instrumental music teachers, excellent hearing and ability to distinguish
pitches and tone quality; if teaching theatre, a personal portfolio that demonstrates experience as
both an actor and in the technical and production side of the stage; if teaching visual arts, a
personal portfolio demonstrating artistic ability and experience in a variety of media; if teaching
in a vocational trade, including business trades, journey-level proficiency in that trade is required
with on-the-job journey, lead, or supervisory experience highly desirable.

STATE REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:
Possession of a Collegiate Professional, or Post Graduate Professional, or License issued by the
Commonwealth of Virginia with endorsement(s) required for teaching assignment(s). Must be
eligible for Virginia Teaching Certification or licensure.

BASIC FUNCTION/NATURE OF WORK:
Under general supervision of a principal and/or other designated administrator, plans and
implements an instructional program and provides related educational services for students in
grades 6-8 and 9-12. Manages student behavior, assesses and evaluates student achievement,
and modifies instructional activities, as required; carries out a variety of student monitoring and
controls activities; performs related duties as required or assigned.
Positions covered by this specification serve as general education classroom teachers in a
middle/high school (grades 6-8 and 9-12). Classes taught may be single or multi-grade level, are
most often subject oriented but may be skill or specialty oriented. Some positions work off site
or in a combination of off site and classroom settings. Incumbents usually perform duties within
a team or departmental setting, but might work independently in a unique teaching specialty.
Some positions are assigned to reading or technology laboratory; other positions are assigned to
science laboratory or industrial arts/technology education laboratory where the use of chemicals
and machinery necessitates a higher level of monitoring to prevent accidental injury to students.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES/ILLUSTRATIVE EX OF WORK:
Works collaboratively with all stake holders in providing a World-Class Education;
• Teaches acting principles and techniques to individuals or groups: Conducts readings to
evaluate student's knowledge in theatre;
• Adapts course of study and training methods to meet student's need and ability;
• Discusses and demonstrates vocal and body expression to teach acting styles, character
development, and personality projection;
• Produces and directs plays for school and public performances;
• Auditions students to select cast and assign parts;
• Rehearses and provides feedback to students to ensure they master parts;
• Teaches and assesses theatre safety at all times;

• Follows and adheres to safety procedures as outlined in the Prince William County Public
Schools Theatre Safety Procedural Manual;
• Directs activities of students involved in constructing, painting, and lighting scenery;
• Teaches elements of stagecraft, stage makeup, costume craft, play writing, or play
direction;
• Assigns nonperforming students to backstage production tasks, such as constructing,
painting, moving scenery, operating stage light, and sound equipment;
• Continually assess student achievement and maintains appropriate assessment and
evaluation documentation for institutional and individual reporting purposes;
• Plans and implements appropriate instructional and/or learning strategies and activities,
including determination of appropriate kind and level of materials, provide appropriate
learning experiences, manage allotted learning time to maximize student achievement,
and utilize a variety of instructional materials and available multi-media and computer
technology to enhance learning;
• Manages the behavior of learners in an instructional setting to ensure environment is
conducive to the learning process, and assist and participate in management of student
behavior in other parts of the school, center, school grounds, or work site;
• Coordinates instructional activities with other professional staff, both school and nonschool-based, as required, to maximize learning opportunities;
• Works in a self-contained, team, departmental, itinerant capacity, or in field or may make
off-school site visits to monitor students, confer with employers, or site instructors;
• Participates in in-service and professional development activities and staff meetings, as
required or assigned;
• Fosters partnerships and ensure continuous communication with parents, both written and
oral, to keep them informed of student(s) progress;
• Continually communicates with students on instructional expectations to keep them
informed of their progress in meeting those expectations;
• Assigns work to and supervises instructional assistants, parent and student volunteers.
• Serves at two or more schools on a regular basis as itinerant;
• Supports or participates in school-wide student activities and social events;
• As assigned or required, monitors student behavior in non-instructional area and
intervene to control and modify disruptive behavior, report to appropriate administrator
as appropriate;
• Collaborates with other professionals (guidance counselors, librarians, etc.) to carry out
school-wide instructional or related activities as needed; and
• Completes other duties as assigned.
