NATURE OF POSITION:
Under the direction of the Chief Academic Officer, the Director of Elementary Instruction is responsible for working with elementary school principals and staff to implement an effective program of instruction for all elementary schools.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Provides leadership and assistance in planning, developing, and implementing an effective elementary school instruction program

Assists principals and teachers in implementing effective instructional programs for the elementary schools

Provides leadership and assistance in planning, implementing, monitoring, and evaluating the elementary school program through the continuous improvement process

Plans and facilitates regularly scheduled meetings with principals and teachers to share information and solve instructional problems

Oversees the selection of textbooks and other instructional materials for use at the elementary level

Provides leadership in the area of best practices and the latest educational research

Directs the Division's Virginia Preschool Initiative program, to include serving as contact person for dissemination of information regarding this area to appropriate administrators, staff, and others

Coordinates the Virginia Continuous School Improvement Processes for elementary schools

Coordinates the elementary school planning process and approves the respective school-based budgets for remedial programs

Works collaboratively and cooperatively with the Director of Middle and High School Instruction, Director of Federal Title I Programs and Instructional Support, and others carrying out the Division's vision for Instruction

Performs other assignments as required by the Chief Academic Officer

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of the Virginia Continuous School Improvement Process. Knowledge of PreK and elementary school philosophy, instruction, and effective teaching practices. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and with a variety of groups. Demonstrated ability to develop, implement, manage, monitor, and assess programs. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

Work is typically performed in an office setting. Regular coordination with school administrators is necessary. Daily liaison activity throughout the division is necessary. Contact with media personnel may be required. Attendance of school division activities is necessary. Regular contact is made with teachers, parents, students, and other community members. These contacts may be contentious. Occasional contact with School Board members, state administrators, and representatives of federal agencies is necessary.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:
Graduation from an accredited undergraduate program in education with a Master's degree in education administration or related field. Must hold or be eligible for licensure in the Commonwealth of Virginia with Administration and Supervision PreK-12 (or equivalent) endorsement. Minimum of five (5) years of successful, increasingly responsible experience in education (teaching and administration, preferred). Successful experience in teaching and/or administration at the elementary school level (grades K-5).

START DATE: As soon after selection as possible.
SALARY / STIPEND: SALARY RANGE: $61,667-$119,303/ annually, depending on experience and advanced degrees. Excellent Benefits Package.
