Buffalo Collegiate Special Education Coordinator Buffalo Collegiate, a new charter school located on the East Side of Buffalo, invites energetic and committed educators to apply to the position of founding Special Education Coordinator. Our school is founded upon the belief that all students can achieve at high levels when provided with high expectations and a supportive learning environment. Buffalo Collegiate will build a team of adults who will work tirelessly to fulfill our mission so that all students are firmly on the path to excel in college and become our next generation of leaders.
We will open in August of 2018 with four classes, two in fourth grade and two in fifth grade. We will add one grade per year until we graduate our first class of college ready twelfth graders in 2026. Buffalo Collegiate seeks authentic, dedicated, kind, and intellectually curious individuals to join our founding team.
Job Description The founding Special Education Coordinator is a full-time teaching and coordinator position leading our Special Education Team. The Special Education Coordinator is responsible for overseeing the pre-referral and referral process of special education, as well as collaborating with the Buffalo Collegiate Leadership Team and District CSE on the creation and execution of IEPs and 504 plans for students with special needs. This person will also have an instructional role with the school, co-teaching and providing pull-out services for English Language Arts and/or Math. At Buffalo Collegiate we are committed to the rapid growth and development of our teachers, who receive frequent professional development opportunities and engage in regular cycles of observation and feedback with their instructional coach. Teachers are responsible for the intellectual preparation for each lesson, building strong and positive relationships with students and families, using data to tailor their instruction, and actively collaborating with their colleagues and grade level teams, particularly around lesson planning and norming instructional practices.

  • Lead the creation, execution, and modification of IEPs and 504 plans. Communicate with the District's Committee for Special Education (CSE) as needed.
  • Collaborate with content area teachers to create and execute lessons that support all students, including those with IEPs or 504 plans.
  • Create and execute lessons for small groups of students that meet their IEP goals.
  • Collaborate with Director of Operations and content area teachers in coordinating schedules, modifications, and accommodations for all students with special needs.
  • Assist Director of Student Support in facilitating professional development related to modifications and accommodations for students with special needs.
  • Assist in the Response to Intervention (RTI) process and any necessary testing.
  • Manage family relationships for students on your caseload who receive special education services.
  • Consistently analyze scholar data and engage in self-reflection on practices to ensure students with special needs perform at the same level as general education students.
  • Provide students with frequent and accurate behavioral and academic feedback.
  • Actively participate in all professional development sessions and weekly coaching sessions, including an annual three-week staff orientation and training beginning on August 1, 2018.
  • Incorporate feedback from instructional coaches in a timely manner.
  • Participate in collaborative curriculum development, grade-level activities, and school-wide functions.
  • Complete all duties and tasks as assigned.

  • Minimum two years of Special Education teaching in an urban setting preferred.
  • Bachelor's Degree required; Master's or advanced degree preferred.
  • New York State Special Education Certification required.
