BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's degree and current Virginia Nursing License (R.N.) are required; Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred, experience in school or public health nursing preferred but not required. Holds and maintains certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support, CPR, and AED.

STATE REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS:

Virginia Nursing License required, as certified by the Virginia Board of Nursing.

The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud during student outbursts.

BASIC FUNCTION/NATURE OF WORK:

The basic function of this position is to provide health assessment related to acute and chronic illness, first aid, mental health, medication management, and health education for students. Provide emergency assessment, triage, and treatment as first responder for staff and students, while coordinating care through Emergency Medical Services and school administration. School nurses are also responsible for health screenings, counseling referral, and follow-up services to students in assigned schools. This position also entails providing information and assistance to faculty and administration in health-related matters pertaining to students and the community. This position also entails providing instruction, information and assistance to faculty and administration in health-related matters.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES/ILLUSTRATIVE EX OF WORK:

All duties and responsibilities are completed within the guidelines and policies of Prince William County Public Schools (PWCS) and in accordance with the Virginia Nurse Practice Act.
• Work collaboratively with all stake holders in Providing A World-Class Education.
• Provides individual and/or group health counseling for students and personnel in assigned school(s).
• Assesses and monitors students with acute or chronic physical and/or mental conditions that affect academic achievement.
• Provides/assists in staff education and training related to medication administration, diabetes, asthma, allergy, anaphylaxis recognition and treatment, and other student health services consistent with PWCS regulations and the requirements of the "Code of Virginia" and regulations of the Virginia Departments of Education and Health
• Assists with referral to appropriate resources and follow-up of identified physical/mental health problems.
• Interprets health status or condition of the student to school personnel and family and makes recommendations regarding health status.
• Educates and trains (when applicable) school staff regarding treatment procedures required at school.
• Develops and implements individual student health care plans.
• Documents all health-related activities, recommendations, and follow-up.
• Maintains confidentiality as mandated by PWCS regulations and state and federal laws regarding health related matters.
• Assesses and monitors issues dealing with new morbidity as it relates to the health of students. Provides and/or oversees hearing and vision screenings consistent with the requirements of Virginia law and regulations of the Virginia Department of Education.
• Provides and/or oversees audiometric screening and visual screening for all new students consistent with the requirements of Virginia law.
• Screens all suspected vision and hearing deficiencies as referred by school staff.
• Makes referrals to parents/guardians for evaluation and treatment of suspected deficiencies.
• Documents all findings, referrals, and follow-ups.
• Serves as a resource to students, parents, and staff on health issues pertaining to students and the community.
• Assesses students for early detection of acute and/or chronic health issues and communicable diseases.
• Participates as the health team specialist on the student education evaluation team to help develop the Individual Education Program (IEP), Intervention Team, or Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) 504 plans as appropriate.
• Acts as a liaison between the health district, students' healthcare provider(s), home, and school in reporting and monitoring of health conditions.
• Assists the school in providing a safe and healthy environment conducive to effective learning.
• Assists in interpretation and application of laws pertaining to school entrance physicals and immunization requirements.
• Assists with developing, reviewing, and implementing emergency procedures.
• Provides classroom teachers with health education information and may present on health-related topics as needed.
• Reviews student emergency cards, health treatment plans, and other medical documentation to compile a Confidential Student Chronic Health Condition list.
• Reviews and educates school administration and staff on medication administration policies, healthcare procedures, and the appropriate delegation of tasks.
• Provides parents with health information and guidelines as they relate to each individual student.
• Attends continuing education activities for current information on the latest evidence-based healthcare practices.
• Maintains the appropriate number of continuing education hours as mandated by the Virginia Board of Nursing for licensure.
• Provides training to principal-designated unlicensed assistive personnel consistent with School Board policies and regulations and Virginia law, and actively participates in professional development programs that address school health nursing.
• Monitors the supervision of clinic attendants in schools where applicable.
• Teaches and instructs office staff regarding job responsibilities, procedures, and practices.
• Reviews clinic records and log books for compliance with guidelines.
• Completes other duties as assigned.
