SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

Under general direction of the Director of Curriculum & Instruction, the K-12 Fine Arts Coordinator works with a high-performing team and provides leadership and coordination for K-12 Fine Arts programs (Music, Visual Arts and Performing Arts). The Coordinator provides leadership in assigned curriculum areas including the supervision of assigned music teachers. The Coordinator coordinates initiatives that assist in shifting teacher practice to better understand critical pedagogy, the expectations of the NVACS, and the need for change based on student evidence through facilitation, observations, co-learning and reflective conversations. Participates in multiple community advisory committees, and boards as needed.

EXEMPLARY DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Supervises and evaluate all itinerate music teachers and all probationary and 1 st year music teachers (average 21-27 teachers at multiple school sites), and the Fine Arts secretary.
  • Coordinates the development / review of curricular tools to support instruction.
  • Participates in standards revision and textbook selection.
  • Participates in assigned community advisory committees.
  • Coordinates all music activities for the WCSD.
  • Facilitates a variety of professional learning opportunities designed to increase the knowledge of the NVACS and researched based instructional practices.
  • Facilitates and organizes the monthly Department Leader meetings with high school leads.
  • Coordinates District PLC workshops and sessions.
  • Coordinates partnership programs and act has a liaison with numerous community arts groups.
  • Represents WCSD on statewide arts and music committees and organizations.
  • Advocates for fine arts programs within WCSD, the community and the State.
  • Arranges district wide music/art assemblies and some school site assemblies and outreach programs.
  • Develops and coordinates the master teaching schedule for all K-6 music teachers and all itinerate music teachers.
  • Coordinates position allocation with Position Control and HR. Evaluate and recommend additional allocation for the music department as needed. Maintain updates of allocation list as needed.
  • Screens, interviews and selects K-6 music and strings positions in the district, and assist with all other music positions hiring as requested by principals.
  • Conducts IDP, hearings, and other meetings as needed.
  • Assists with observations and supervision as needed with other music staff and per request from site principals.
  • Conducts new teacher orientation meetings and coordinate music mentor assignments.
  • Maintains the district music budget, general fund, Title II, grant funds, and donated budgets.
  • Coordinates distribution of instruments and materials for all levels from inventory.
  • Evaluates, updates, and determines purchases for district inventory of music and instruments.
  • Develops policy and procedures for all District music activities.
  • Coordinates the All State music group travel and student participation.
  • Coordinates with transportation between WCSD transportation office, The Pioneer Center, and/or the Reno Philharmonic for all youth concerts.


EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS

Education/Experience : Any combination of education and experience that would provide the required knowledge and skills is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills would be:

  • Education: A Master's Degree in School Administration or related field;

  • AND

  • Experience: Five (5) years teaching experience, preferably in the area of Fine Arts. Candidate must demonstrate evidence of leadership and involvement in the area of Fine Arts;

  • AND
  • Effective or highly effective evaluations in the last five (5) years.


  • Knowledge of: Curriculum development and implementation; teacher evaluation process; current teacher contracts; district and state policies and procedures; current information pertaining to assigned content areas; and principles of effective management, staff supervision and administration.

    Skill at: Group dynamics; organizing, assigning and coordinating district-wide programs; creating, planning, organizing, and coordinating activities and workshops; scheduling teachers district-wide; supervision; communication with a variety of individuals: visualizing ideas and composing action plans; curriculum development; presenting ideas and communicating effectively, verbally and in writing to adult and/or student audiences; assessing programs and revising as needed; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work; working with people, staff supervision and administration.

    Licenses/Certificates: Possession of a valid Nevada teaching certificate; possession of a Master's degree and valid Nevada Administrative Certificate.

    Physical Demands: The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably to do the work. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending; carrying of light items, such as papers, books, or small parts; or driving an automobile. No special physical demands are required to perform the work.

    Work Environment: The environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, meeting and training rooms, libraries, residences, or commercial vehicles, e.g., use of safe work practices with office equipment, avoidance of trips and falls, observance of fire regulations and traffic signals. The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated.

If an administrator is not reappointed to his or her administrative position pursuant to this section and was previously employed by the school district in another position, the administrator is entitled to be assigned to his or her former position at the rate of compensation provided for that position.

    Salary Range: $86, 697 - $126, 998

    Salaries are subject to adjustment and may increase and decrease each fiscal year. New employees hired by Washoe County School District are normally placed on the entry step of the grade of the position.

    This is a limited term standard position ending June 2019. This position is grant-funded and is contingent upon continued funding. The hiring administrator may retain incumbent for the duration of the grant without re-advertising.
