Assistant Director, Early Childhood Science

Job Details

Boston Public Schools seeks an Assistant Director of Early Childhood Science. This role will work collaboratively with an interdisciplinary team to craft coherent instructional guidance for schools, deliver aligned professional learning to schools and implement intensive supports when required. The Assistant Director of Early Childhood Science will also ensure vertical alignment through collaboration with ELA Directors in other grade-bands.

In order to support all youth to achieve at high levels, we need to build a structure in which people with deep knowledge of how diverse learners learn best come together to develop and support a vision for learning that sees the whole child, and his/her whole learning experience. We currently operate within a structure that often creates a disjointed experience for students. Content departments focus on how their content is delivered to students via curriculum and pedagogy but there is limited cross-functional work that ensures that students' experiences each day feel cohesive and aligned.

Transforming how academic services are provided by the central office will require new teams with that will be responsible for collaborative work around grade bands, rather than primarily with contents. These grade band teams will operate under the supervision of an Executive Director.

These teams will be made up of Content Directors with the following core responsibilities:
  • Build knowledge and skills at schools related to collaborative adult learning.
  • Build knowledge and skills at schools related to district-wide instructional foci.
  • Work as part of a cross-functional (OPL, OELL, Special Education and SELW, and OIIT) team to ensure a cohesive instructional experience for students within the grade band, that allow all youth to achieve at high levels
  • collaborate regularly with cross-functional team (OPL, OELL, Special Education and SELW, and OIIT) to develop exemplar practices and lessons that align to the district vision of effective instruction and innovate and transform teaching and learning to inspire excellence
  • Collaborate with a cross-grade band team (PreK-2, 3-6, 7-12) to develop a cohesive K-12 vision for content area instruction
  • consult with leadership teams to advance the implementation of schools' instructional foci in his/her content area
  • Support the development and implementation of systems that empower and hold accountable, those closest to students to make the most critical decisions that lead to student achievement
  • Conduct tool development cycles that use Lean methodologies integrating user feedback.
  • Design and deliver professional learning experience for school leaders and teachers
  • Demonstrate significant adaptive leadership qualities that prioritize group quality and collective impact.
  • Intensive summer work to prepare for support during the school year.
  • Work flows will align broadly with the following expectations:
    • 1/3 of time with grade band teams in schools or providing training
    • 1/3 of time with grade band team developing training/guidance material
    • 1/3 of time with content team to develop/refine content-specific training/guidance and collaborative work that ensures K-12 alignment
  • Other related duties as assigned

Deliverables:
  • A co-created, cross-content vision for instruction within the grade band that is aligned with the BPS vision for effective instruction and with the K-12 vision of a BPS graduate
  • A co-created, content-specific vision for instruction that is aligned with the BPS vision for effective instruction and with the K-12 vision of a BPS graduate
  • Workplans that demonstrate an integrated approach between multiple contents
  • Data-driven strategy updates that make tactical adjustments but retain alignment to the shared team vision.
  • Exemplar curriculum materials for content and grade band that align to the BPS vision for effective instruction and that reflect UDL design principles
  • Tools and resources that support schools in realizing their instructional foci within the content area (shared via the Instructional Focus Toolkits)
  • Professional learning modules that support ongoing learning of teachers and school leaders
  • Quarterly report on the status of instruction within the content area that includes student data, professional learning summaries and feedback, and observational data from classrooms and team meetings.

Qualifications:
  • Experience:
    • Recent teaching experience with students with diverse needs with evidence of positive student impact
    • Teacher leadership experience (Lead Teacher, PLC Facilitator, Team Leader, ILT Facilitator. etc.)
    • Extensive knowledge and skills developing teachers and/or empowering teacher leaders with evidence of effectiveness.
    • Proficiency with consensus-building and collective vision-setting and collaboration.
    • Experience with whole-child, integrated, cross-discipline curriculum design.
  • Education:
    • Bachelor's degree required
    • Master's degree in content or content pedagogy preferred
  • Licensure:
    • Holds appropriate MA DESE license within content area for the appropriate grade levels.
    • Director/Supervisor License
