LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION: Strong applications for this position include letters of recommendation from former and current supervisors, which speak to strengths in the areas of professionalism, collegiality, instructional capacity, and classroom management.

SUMMARY OF ASSIGNMENTS:

Coordinate the art program in assigned buildings.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Instruct students in art curriculum.
  2. Provide classroom lessons which are motivating and give students experiences in a variety of art media, materials, and tools.
  3. Develop lesson plans which will implement the basic goals and objectives of the art curriculum according to the needs of students.
  4. Work with faculty members in techniques for integrating art into classroom lessons and in the appropriate use of the kiln and other art supplies as time permits.
  5. Evaluate student's progress by keeping appropriate records.
  6. Attend scheduled meetings and inservices.
  7. Participate in the display of student work within the assigned buildings and at a district level as requested.
  8. Maintain professional competence through participation in inservice activities provided by the district and/or self-selected professional growth activities.
  9. Contribute to the ongoing development of the art curriculum and districtwide art programs.
  10. Perform other assignments as directed.


QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Qualify for a valid Washington State teaching certificate with appropriate endorsements as required by law and regulations.
  2. Demonstrate classroom management procedures that establish effective management routines and provide for a positive environment for learning.
  3. Consistently manage discipline in a positive and effective manner.
  4. Demonstrate clarity of expression by communicating effectively both in both written and oral form.
  5. Participate in change in a constructive way. Flexible in dealing with changing conditions.
  6. Be enthusiastic and display an overall optimism toward teaching and learning.
  7. Diagnose the student needs, prescribe, plan, implement effective lesson plans, and remain current in appropriate instructional skills.
  8. Gain the respect and confidence of students, parents, and staff through the modeling of appropriate behavior.
  9. Set and attain goals with a commitment to accomplishment.
  10. Develop appropriate relationships and interactions with students.
  11. Possess a cumulative college GPA of at least 2.5. (This requirement may be waived if for a specific position an inadequate pool of fully qualified applicants exist.)
  12. Acquired 48 hours of art courses. Preference will be given to candidates with an art major and have experience in teaching art.
  13. Knowledge and understanding of a wide range of art media to support the curriculum.
  14. Knowledge of the theory and function of an elementary art program.
  15. Knowledge and understanding of creating and using demonstrations and models for the media/lessons being presented.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

WORK YEAR: Certificated employees are contracted for a 180-day work year for a full year contract. BENEFITS - Fringe benefits for employees .5 or greater FTE include medical, dental, vision, basic life insurance, and long-term disability coverage are provided for employees who work at least half-time or more in a regular position. In addition, employees have access to a variety of optional benefits through payroll deduction. SITE GOVERNANCE - Completion of transfer, reassignment to another location, change of position, promotion, or new hire is contingent upon the individual's agreement to sign the charter and any variances which may exist at the site and agreement to work within the framework of any covenant and principles of learning as determined by the site. ASSOCIATION MEMBERSHIP - Pursuant to the collective bargaining agreement between Spokane Public Schools and the Spokane Education Association, a newly-elected employee must either become a member of the association, pay an equivalent representation fee, or based on a bona fide religious objections, pay an equivalent amount to a nonreligious charity mutually agreed upon by the employee and the association.
