J ob Summary
The reading specialist role requires particular expertise in the area of reading instruction. The reading specialist will support teachers and students in meeting the individual needs of students in the area of reading. It is expected that the specialist will work collaboratively with District leadership, Principals and Teachers to identify and implement effective strategies for student achievement. He/she will have further responsibility of understanding and assisting in implementing current methodologies, effective instructional strategies and facilitating reading-related professional development.
Essential Functions
  • Implement and monitor a plan for reading support.
  • Provide small group (pull-out) reading instruction (before, during, and/or after school) to students in need of remediation.
  • Provide push-in reading intervention.
  • Provide one-on-one coaching for teachers in the area of reading.
  • Facilitate small group/grade group professional development.
  • Model, co-plan, co-deliver reading instruction.
  • Assist classroom teachers by providing them with additional strategies for those students who have been identified for additional instruction.
  • Work with the classroom teacher to monitor student progress.
Minimum Requirements
  • Master's degree in Reading from an accredited college or university.
  • Five years of full-time, paid, professional appointed classroom or site-based teaching experience in a specific content area.
  • Experience supporting teachers and students in improving reading achievement.
  • All work experience related to the position must be included on the resume.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Demonstrated knowledge of:
  • five essential components of literacy instruction.
  • effective reading strategies.
Demonstrated ability to :
  • to plan and administer effective district-wide and school- specific professional development.
  • review students' reading data to develop individualized remediation plans.
  • support teachers in understanding effective reading instruction.
  • establish and maintain working relationships.

Certificates/Licenses
Possession of the valid Commonwealth of Pennsylvania K-12 Reading Specialist certificate

Additional Job Information: This is a PFT represented position. Please note that this position is a one year, grant funded role.

Selected candidates who meet the qualifications of the position will be invited to take the required examinations. Additional factors including the ability to follow directions, punctuality, and professional conduct will be considered in part of the evaluation process.

Part One: 50% Oral Interview
Part Two: 50% Performance Task

Only candidates who have received a passing score on Part One of the examination will be invited for Part Two.

The selected candidate must have no anecdotal record on file and have not been subject to any disciplinary action within the past eighteen (18) months, and have an excellent record of attendance and punctuality during the last three (3) years (defined as no more than eighteen (18) occasions of lateness or absence for personal illness in the last three years (3) years with the exception of one extended long-term absence).
