Master's degree in Social Work and must be certified, licensed or eligible for licensing or certification by the State Department of Education.

BASIC FUNCTION/NATURE OF WORK:
The basic function of the School Social Worker is to support the overall mission of Prince William County Schools by alleviating barriers to learning for students through the provision of services that strengthen home, school, and community partnerships. School Social Workers contribute to the development of a healthy, safe and caring environment by increasing awareness of the social/emotional strengths and needs of students. The School Social Worker assists the schools in identifying family, community and cultural factors that affect student academic performance.

  • Work collaboratively with all stake holders in providing a world-class education

  • Conducts strengths and needs assessment and collects data regarding environmental factors that are adversely impacting student learning.

  • Participates with early intervention school teams which use assessment and evaluation results to develop appropriate interventions for students and families in collaboration with school and community resources.

  • Utilizes a variety of assessment tools and techniques to evaluate progress of students and families in regard to identified outcomes that promote improved student learning.

  • Develops intervention strategies to remove barriers to learning that align with the delivery of the PWCS Curriculum.

  • Assists in the evaluation of school-based programs to determine their effectiveness in alleviating barriers to learning.

  • Collaborates in the provision of targeted group interventions to students who have been identified through the analysis of data as needing assistance in developing pro-social skill competencies.

  • Provides individual counseling to students that require more intensive support as determined by an analysis of data in order to achieve their learning potential.

  • Participates in the Prince William County School Division's prevention/intervention initiatives including violence/bullying prevention, suicide prevention, and drop out prevention.

  • Works collaboratively with all PWCS staff in the provision of services to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of service delivery to students and families.

  • Participates as a member of the Critical Incident Team (CIT), to support individual schools, in response to crisis situations.

  • Participates in the threat assessment process at the school level.

  • Performs functions related to the special education eligibility and service delivery process to include: administration of appropriate assessments to obtain information that is relevant to the eligibility decision for suspected areas of disability; development of FBA/BIP, participation in MDR meetings, provision of counseling as a related service, collection of data for services delivered on the IEP and engagement of parents throughout the special education process.

  • Initiates and supports activities to overcome organizational barriers and gaps in services as leaders and members of interdisciplinary teams with the unique contribution of bringing an awareness of the home, school, and community perspectives together.

  • Participates as a member of collaborative teams to plan school-wide initiatives designed to promote a safe, healthy, and caring school climate that supports improved student learning.

  • Works to strengthen the relationship between the home, the school, and the community to develop programs and systems of care based on an awareness of the reciprocal influences of these environments and their relevance in terms of improved student learning.

  • Collaborates with Comprehensive Child Study (CCS) staff to build effective school- community teams and orient community providers to school climate, culture, and organizational structure as well as the laws, policies, and regulations governing social work practice in the educational setting.

  • Works in collaboration with CCS to assist parents in understanding and navigating the complexities of organizational systems in order to improve access to community-based services.

  • Works with parents to strengthen relationships with school personnel in order to improve student learning.

  • Provides adequate safeguards to maintain the privacy and confidentiality of information per Prince William County Schools' policies and regulations.

  • Maintains knowledge of current trends in assessment, service delivery, and best practices for School Social Workers through a regular review of professional journals, books, internet references, and participation in a professional learning community.

  • Participates in staff development and professional conferences to remain current in the field of school social work.

  • Adheres to the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Code of Ethics.

  • Abides by current federal and state laws in regards to persons with disabilities, child welfare, mental health, confidentiality, and student and parent rights.

  • Evaluates own practice in regards to organization, efficiency, and effectiveness based on an analysis of data.

  • Demonstrates the effectiveness of professional practice through the collection of multiple sources of evidence.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
