As a member of Ascend's technology team, the senior systems administrator will play a critical role supporting and administering the organization's applications and infrastructure. Travel between our Brooklyn schools and occasional weekend and/or evening work is required.

The senior systems administrator will research and recommend innovative - and where possible - automated approaches for system administration tasks. Additionally, the senior systems administrator will:

 

  • Identify approaches that leverage our resources and provide cost savings
  • Engineering and Provisioning
  • Install new/rebuild existing servers and configure hardware, peripherals, services, settings, directories, storage, etc. in accordance with standards and project/operational requirements
  • Develop and maintain installation and configuration procedures
  • Contribute to and maintain system standards
  • Operations and Support
  • Perform daily system monitoring, verifying the integrity and availability of all hardware, server resources, systems and key processes, reviewing system and application logs, and verifying completion of scheduled jobs such as backups and automated scripts
  • Perform regular file archival, backup. and purge as necessary
  • Perform regular security monitoring to identify any possible intrusions
  • Provide Tier III support to other tech staff. Investigate, research, and troubleshoot issues
  • Create, change, and delete user accounts per request
  • Repair and recover hardware or software failures
  • Coordinate and communicate with impacted staff and techs
  • Maintenance
  • Apply OS patches and upgrades regularly
  • Configure/add new services as necessary
  • Maintain operational, configuration, or other procedures
  • Perform periodic performance reporting
  • Maintain data center environmental and monitoring equipment
  • Perform ongoing performance tuning, hardware upgrades, and resource optimization as required
  • Configure CPU, memory, and disk partitions as required.

Staff and Reporting Relationships

 

 

 

The senior systems administrator reports to the managing director of technology.

 


Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from a competitive college or university
  • 5+ years of work experience in a fast-paced, rapidly evolving environment
  • A proven track record and high degree of proficiency in at least five of the technical areas below:
  • Switching/Routing/Firewalls/Load Balancing
  • Wireless networking (Autonomous, Lightweight, and/or Cloud Managed infrastructures)
  • VoIP technologies and implementations
  • Microsoft Server Technologies (Windows Server 2008 R2/2012 R2, Hyper-V, IIS, File & print services)
  • Microsoft Domain Management (AD DS, ADFS 2.0, DNS, DHCP, DirSync)
  • Microsoft Client Management (Group Policy, Desktop Imaging)
  • DR/Resiliency planning (clustering, backups, email archiving/journaling)
  • Supporting BES, Blackberry/iOS/Android/Windows devices
  • Industry certifications are a plus (Microsoft, Cisco, PMI, HP, etc.)
  • Demonstrated ability to diagnose issues, identify root causes, and design effective solutions
  • Experience with a student information system
  • Experience managing policies and procedures to set best practices and deliver high-quality support
