    The filling of this position is based upon continued funding in the Board of Education budget.

    Note: Teachers dually certified in TESOL, Bilingual Education or ESL, with experience in Sheltered Instruction or fluency in a language other than English, will be given preference for all Stamford Public School positions.

    General Statement:
    The Trauma Support Specialist will provide training, consultation, and support to the elementary schools and families who are working with students presenting significant behavioral problems. The Trauma Support Specialist will help schools and families understand the impact of trauma and post-traumatic stress on students, teachers, classrooms, and schools. In conjunction with other student support services staff the Trauma Support Specialist will assist in developing trainings for staff in understanding trauma. The Trauma Support Specialist will collaborate with the District Department Head for Social Work, and will report to the Executive Director of Student Support Services and Special Programs.

    Major Responsibilities:

    Training:
    • Assist schools in assessing for a trauma history, and understanding traumatic stress and symptoms of complex trauma.
    • Provide building staff and families with psychoeducation around trauma.
    • Assist schools in learning strategies and skills to respond to student behavioral needs in a trauma informed way.
    • Work closely with community providers that offer trauma informed therapy and Emergency Mobile Psychiatric Services (EMPS).

    Consultation and Support:
    • Assist schools in providing crisis intervention service to students and families.
    • Assist schools in developing a student support plan.
    • Consult with staff on implementation of the support plan from sending school.
    • Work closely with out of district team when the need for a higher level of care arises.

    Qualifications:
    • A valid Connecticut teacher certificate with endorsement in Social Work (071) or School Psychology (070).
    • Minimum of three (3) years professional experience in social work or psychology. Experience in a public school setting preferred.
    • Possess a thorough knowledge of present practices and current trends in trauma and trauma based interventions.
    • Experience in working directly with students and families.
    • A working knowledge of community resources.
    • Proven ability to work effectively as part of an interdisciplinary team.
    • Superior communication skills (oral and written).

    Three (3) Years

    Work Year:
    186 days per year; up to 10 additional days, as needed, paid at the per diem rate.
