This is a position within the Smarter Balanced division of the University of California Santa Cruz Extension. The selected candidate must be able to work remotely from a home office.

Smarter Balanced is a member-led organization of states and territories that collaborate to provide formative, interim and summative assessment resources (e.g. tools, items, tests, etc) that help educators better prepare their students to be college and career ready after they leave high school. 

This senior director position involves planning, developing, implementing and evaluating programs, activities, counseling, tutoring and advising focused on students' successful graduation from high school and college, and career readiness. Works with students, program alumni, teachers, counselors, school districts, community stakeholders and parents. 

The senior director manages a team that reports assessment results to educators, supports formative assessment processes and educator professional development and derives and implements a long-term plan to develop an assessment system that supports competency-based student learning approaches. Formulates policies and procedures. Provides leadership for developing and advancing short and long-term program goals and strategies. Ensures compliance with mandated program requirements. Represents the program internally and externally. Develops and manages the operating budget. Manages human resources. 

Qualifications / Competencies

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Knowledge of pedagogical issues underlying student academic development and achievement for low-income, first-generation students. 
  • Extensive knowledge of youth and adolescent development theory, including issues facing low income, first generation and urban youth. 
  • Demonstrated cultural competency with respect to race, ethnicity, and socioeconomic status. 
  • Advanced knowledge of current state and national education policies, theories, and practices.
  • Advanced knowledge of strategies for advising and supporting educationally disadvantaged students regarding post-secondary opportunities and careers.
  • Expert knowledge and understanding of K-14 educational equity programs and issues. 
  • Knowledge of organizational development strategies and practices. 
  • Advanced writing, research, and communication skills to prepare highly competitive proposals, reports, and materials. 
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with diverse individuals and institutions. 
  • Strong interpersonal skills, including presentation, communication, negotiation, leadership, problem-solving, and conflict resolution. 
  • Expert knowledge of project management, including program design, implementation, and evaluation. 
  • Advanced knowledge and experience with fiscal and personnel management. 
  • Expert knowledge of staff development including supervision and training. 
  • Demonstrated knowledge of relevant federal / state regulations and accountability / reporting requirements. 

Preferred Qualifications / Competencies

Advanced Degree in Education, Psychology, Sociology or related area.  

Special Conditions of Employment

  • The selected candidate will be required to pass a criminal history background check. 
  • Must be able to work remotely from a home office. 
  • Active or Inactive teaching or education administration license in California or another state. 
  • Ability to travel when needed. Travel of approximately 2-3 trips per month may be required.
