Job Description

Job Title: Special Education Coordinator
Department: Office of Specialized Services
Reports to: Director of Specialized Services

I. COORDINATION:
  • Create a Special Education Meeting Calendar for staff based on IEP dates of compliance.Complete all notifications of conferences for Eligibillity, Pre-Diagnostic meetings and Manifestation Determination meetings.Keep the Director of Specialized Services informed of all anticipated/actual financial needs generated as part of the Individual Education Plan (IEP) process.Work with Director of Specialized Services, building administrator(s), and state agencies to inform and facilitate Special Education programming.Follows all rules and regulations of Special Education law including preparing reports for state and local indicators, submitting data to the District office, scheduling meetings, and keeping and maintaining IEP records and other documents that pertain to Special Education.Work with Special Education staff, outside consultants/specialists, and school administration to provide appropriate trainings for Paraprofessionals and staff.Ensure Individual Education Plan distribution, in conjunction with the Special Education Department Chairs, to all staff participating in students' educational program.Coordinate with EL staff for students who are designated EL/IEP. Ensure representation of EL staff at all meetings.Serve on District and community committees relating to Special Education topics as requested.Serve as Local Educational Agency (LEA) for all Individual Education Plan meetings including referrals.Assist Special Education Case Managers/Teachers Individual Education Plan development (Present Levels of Performance, update and revise annual goals and benchmarks, maintaining compliance in providing accommodations), monitoring, and scheduling.Maintain the Special Education files for compliance monitoring for all students whose Home School is Proviso East or Proviso West.Working with appropriate evaluators, ensure that assessments are completed in a timely manner.Consult with Transition Coordinator, PAEC, and outside agencies to support student transitional needs.Support school administration in building level student supervision needs, including attendance and discipline concerns (Manifestations, Special Education screening)In consultation with the School Psychologist, Guidance Department, and outside consultants, develop and support the implementation of positive behavioral plans.Work with the School Nurse to facilitate the development of nursing plans and to support training for staff for medically fragile students.Participate in Medicaid Fee-for-Service time studies.

II. TRANSPORTATION
  • Arrange for all Special Education transportation needs through PAEC.Support student needs (Paraprofessional support, specialized equipment, etc.) for field trips, special events, athletic activities, and transition programming as needed.Communicate the transportation policy to all staff responsible for providing transportation for students with disabilities.

III. Communication
  • Attend regularly scheduled District level coordinator's meeting with the Director of Specialized Services.Report on a timely basis anticipated/potential costs/challenges/successes/needs as a result of Individual Education Plan meetings and/or other indicators.Conduct weekly consultation meetings with Special Education staff during PLC meetings.Provide specific trainings related to student needs/updates on law/changes in procedures, etc.Review, and revise and/or develop Special Education policies and procedures with the Director of Specialized Services.Maintain an open line of communication with outside vendors, agencies, and families as students transition through the school system.Serve as the liaison with School Principals, Special Education/Case Managers, and outside agencies keeping them abreast of challenges and successes in the area of school student needs and Special Education programs.Promote and coordinate activities that support the inclusion of students with disabilities throughout the District and in the community.

IV. SUPPLIES & EQUIPMENT
  • Inform district and/or cooperative of the need for assistive technology devices in accordance with student IEPs.Work with the Occupational Therapist, Speech & Language Pathologist, and Physical Therapist to procure appropriate equipment for students with communication and/or physical needs.Order all supplies necessary for the efficient operation of the Special Education Coordinator's office.Notify Director of Special Services of needs not included in District budget or of costs not covered by IDEA grant.
