JOB TITLE : Sign Language Interpreter- Multiple locations (3 positions)

REPORTS TO : Principal/Team Leader of Deaf Hard of Hearing (DHH)

GRADE: 11-12-13

STARTING SALARY $22.86- $27.27- based upon qualifications and certification

DESCRIPTION : Serves as an intermediary of communication for students who are deaf and hard of hearing.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES :
Provides sign and voice interpreting using American Sign Language, conceptually accurate signed English, or a combination of the two, for students who are deaf or hard of hearing.

Clarifies information for students by restating or paraphrasing the information commensurate to students' signing skills and cognitive levels.

Explains the role and responsibilities of a sign language interpreter to students and staff.

Assists students in the development of their receptive and expressive sign language skills, including expansion of signed vocabulary (i.e., such as use of visuals, picture/sign references, previewing content signs with students, etc.), expansion of the signed presentation, and finger spelling skills.

Assists students in developing self-advocacy skills necessary to properly access interpreting services.

Assists students and staff in effectively accessing interpreting services.

Assists school personnel in the implementation of classroom accommodations and modifications related to students' hearing loss and communication modality.

Collaborates with the school team to develop and document the sign communication skills of students with hearing loss.

Completes documentation required of interpreters in Baltimore County Public Schools.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :

Education, Training and Experience :
HS Diploma or equivalent.
Successful completion of a recognized sign language interpreter training program,
OR
RID NIC Certification, or RID Educational Certificate.

Experience in a K-12 environment preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities :
Knowledge of educational interpreting, hearing loss, and deaf culture.

Skill in interpreting American Sign Language and conceptually accurate signed English, including excellent receptive and expressive interpreting skills. Efficient time management skills.

Positive human relations skills demonstrated by the ability to establish effective working relationships with students and staff in an educational setting.

Demonstrate skills to appropriately maintain confidential information and function in a professional manner in the role of a sign language interpreter.

PHYSICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS :
The work of this class may include travel to schools and offices throughout the system.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT :
Full time; 10-month

FLSA : Non-Exempt

Employees in this class may be required to work afternoons, evenings, and weekends based on the schedules of students.

This class specification defines the types of duties and level of difficulty of work required of positions in this title. It shall not be held to exclude duties not mentioned nor limit the right of management to assign work to employees.

Pre-Employment Requirements:
  • All persons employed by the Baltimore County Public Schools, regular and temporary, are required to be fingerprinted and have a criminal background investigation (State of Maryland, Senate Bill 315, effective October 1, 1986) completed. The fee charged for fingerprinting is $67.75. An identification card will be issued which must be shown prior to employment.
  • Anyone offered employment is required to provide proper identification and documentation of eligibility for employment in the US.
  • If you have military experience you will be asked to provide a copy of DD214.
  • Official transcripts for all higher education must be received prior to hire.
  • Some positions will require employees to undergo a physical examination and/or drug testing.
  • All newly hired personnel must attend a Badges and Benefits session.
  • Additional job verification will be required for salary credit.
