Art Integration Specialist

This summer the HMLS is offering a program housed at the Carlton Innovation School for HMLS' students finishing kindergarten, first, second, third and fourth grade. Instruction will emphasize disciplinary (content) literacy in particular science (ocean/water) and service learning. Students will also receive instruction in reading, writing, word work, oral language, science inquiry and art. Daily ocean walks and field trips will provide the opportunity to incorporate science inquiry naturally and will ultimately culminate in a service-learning project presented to the Salem/ HMLS community.

Teachers will work with a small group of children along with a team including group leaders, literacy interventionists, a behavior specialist and an art integration specialist. Teachers will be responsible for co-planning, leading students through a service learning project that showcases their newly learned science content and implementing authentic writing, vocabulary and speaking thematically, guided reading, differentiated phonics and hands-on science investigations. Teachers are responsible for setting up classroom environments, selecting materials, providing a mentorship for group leaders and collaborating closely with the director who will also serve as literacy coach. Teachers will also be responsible to assess literacy and science content in the beginning and in the end of the program.

Desired qualifications for the Art Integration Specialist include but are not limited to:
  • Experience teaching grades K-5 art
  • Experience in planning service-learning projects
  • Practical knowledge of integrating the content areas subject matter across all mediums
  • Ability to co-plan and collaborate with classroom teachers
  • Ability to plan age-appropriate art lessons
  • Experience setting up a gallery/ exhibition for the last day celebration


The HMLS Summer Program will run Monday through Thursday July 9 th -August 2 nd . Teachers will be with students from 8:00AM-12:00PM.

A mandatory professional development workshop will be held on Monday June 25 th from 3:30 to 8:30 PM. The art integration specialist must be available for part of this time.

Stipend: $720.00 for working 8-12 four days of the program (2 weeks, 2 days per week)

Letters of interest stating your qualifications and intentions for teaching in the HMLS Summer Program will be accepted until Wednesday, June 6 th .
