Summary
The I CARE Specialist works as a trained educator in parish schools, as assigned, in the areas of prevention, intervention, and postvention for substance abuse, violence and crisis. The Specialist conducts trainings of students, teachers, school personnel, parents and the general community in issues relative to educating and preparing all children for living a healthy, safe and drug-free lifestyle. The Specialist also works with students individually and in groups to address problems related to substance abuse and violence that might be affecting their school performance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists in the development of prevention needs assessments and recommends overall prevention strategies to be used with identified school populations
  • Conducts in-service trainings and provides ongoing assistance for school personnel on implementation of prevention curricula and other strategies and on current prevention issues including identification of the signs and symptoms of alcohol and other drug use
  • Monitors the implementation and evaluation of prevention programs in assigned schools
  • Provides training for parents and other community members based on assessed needs
  • Assists in design, development and implementation of conferences, workshops and training sessions
  • Works collaboratively with school personnel/committees/teams to address related areas of concern
  • Conducts individual student assessments and interventions, facilitates student support groups and makes referrals to appropriate resources
  • Assists school personnel in developing, training and implementing student leadership programs (i.e. Peer Helpers, TeamSpirit, President's Roundtable, cross-age training, etc.)
  • Works in collaboration with school and community agencies/organizations/department/programs that address high risk behaviors and attends advisory council meetings, PTA/PTO and faculty meetings, as needed
  • Maintains appropriate records and documentations
  • Pursues professional growth opportunities including, but not limited to, the acquisition of and/or maintenance of the License for Prevention ProfessionalsParticipates actively on staff committees and teams to promote and maximize collaboration and communication, sharing of expertise, diversity and networking

Qualifications: Graduate of an accredited college or university with a master's degree. A valid Louisiana teaching certificate with at least five years successful teaching experience. Training and/or experience in the field of substance abuse and violence prevention with skills in counseling, group process, peer leadership, critical thinking and collaborative undertaking preferred. Currently holds a License for Prevention Professionals (formerly Board Certification as a Prevention Specialist), issued by Addictive Disorders Regulatory Authority Board (ADRA Board) or will complete the requirements for and obtain aforementioned license within three (3) years of employment with the I CARE program
