ESL Teachers

ESL Teachers work collaboratively with grade level teachers and are primarily responsible for the development of appropriate curricula, daily high quality instruction, and the on-going success of each and every student in the school.

Responsibilities include, but are not necessarily limited to, the following:
  • Demonstrates skills in English language, literature, composition, reading and writing to bilingual high school students and other available technology methods or standard
  • Administer a language screener for bilingual students for whom a language barrier is impeding their academic success.
  • Evaluates each student's progress in English skills (listening speaking, reading, and writing) and prepares progress reports
  • Prepares teaching materials and related reports (grading papers with objective answers, attendance and anecdotal records) for the purpose of implementing lesson plans and documenting student progress
  • Models appropriate English communication for the purpose of developing students' ability to communicate effectively in the English language.
  • Uses language teaching strategies to increase English proficiency for students who speak a language other than English at home
  • Servers as an advocate for the needs of the ESL students
  • Assists students, individually or in groups, with lesson assignments to present or reinforce learning concepts
  • Provides structure in the classroom by promoting a positive classroom environment that is conducive to learning
  • Works under the general supervision of the building principal, ELL Director, ELL Coordinator/Coach, teachers and or other designated administrator, to review student proficiency levels, appropriate ESL services, and ELL data, manages student behavior, assesses and evaluates student achievement
  • Additional duties may be assigned

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree (Required) Masters Degree preferred
  • Required Massachusetts teaching certification/licensure in ESL K-6, 5-12; Highly Qualified status under No Child Left Behind
  • The ability to meet the expectations of the Massachusetts Standards and Indicators of Effective Teaching Practice
  • Second Language (Spanish) Proficiency strongly preferred
  • Bilingual candidates and candidates of color strongly encouraged to apply
  • Secondary license in content area or Special Education, also preferred
  • Current authorization to work in the United States
