Summary
The primary responsibility of the School Counselor shall be counseling students and providing those services directly related to that counseling. The School Counselor shall be responsible for the effective management of the school counseling department of the school to which assigned. The school counseling program shall be conducted in accordance with policies adopted by the Board of Education and with regulations and procedures of the district.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Counseling
• Provides individual counseling in a confidential setting.
• Provides small group counseling sessions in a confidential setting
• Provides activities and experiences for students to:
• Develops a positive self-concept through an understanding of abilities, interests, and strengths.
• Develops appropriate social skills.
• Develops a positive attitude toward acceptable behavior at school, at home, and in the community.
• Develops problem-solving skills.
• Develops career-related goals.

Consultation
• Consults with appropriate personnel and/or agencies on behalf of the student.
• Provides opportunities for administrators, teachers, and parents to discuss concerns related to students.
• Maintains and fosters confidentiality in regard to information concerning students.
• Participates in the School Building Level Committee/Building Level Committee.

Coordination
• Coordinates the testing program and interprets test scores.
• Coordinates and disseminates information regarding graduation requirements and course descriptions, as appropriate.
• Participates in orientation activities.

Planning
• Identifies and plans for individual differences.
• Develops a written plan with clear and concise objectives for providing guidance services.
• Plans effectively for instruction.

Management
• Takes appropriate precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
• Maintains an environment conducive to learning.
• Maximizes the amount of time available for instruction.
• Maintains accurate, complete and correct records as related to counseling services.
• Manages learner behavior to provide productive learning opportunities.

Instruction
• Assesses student progress.
• Provides opportunities for student involvement in the learning process.
• Presents appropriate content.
• Delivers instruction effectively.
• Integrates technology into instruction.
• Produces evidence of students academic growth under his/her instruction.

School Improvement
• Takes an active role in building-level decision making
• Participates in grade-level/subject area curriculum planning and evaluations
• Serves on task forces and decision making committees, when appropriate
• Implements school improvement plan
• Creates partnerships with parents/caregivers and colleagues
• Provides clear and timely information to parents/caregivers and colleagues regarding classroom expectations, student progress, and ways they can assist learning.
• Encourages parents/caregivers to become active partners in their children's education and to become involved in school and classroom.
• Seeks community involvement in the instructional program

Not applicable. Essential Functions and Qualifications
The essential functions for the position of School Counselor include the physical and mental involvement requirements noted in this position description in addition to regular reliable attendance given the limited number of employees available to perform the essential functions of this position. It is also essential that the School Counselor be able to follow the directives of superiors in insuring the harmonious operation of the department.

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE
The School Counselor must hold a valid Louisiana Teaching Certificate and must have completed three years of successful teaching experience at the assigned levels of Elementary and Secondary. Must hold Louisiana State Certification in Guidance and Counseling.

LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents. Ability to respond to inquiries or complaints. Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format. Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups, and the school board.

REASONING ABILITY
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, reach, bend and sometimes lift up to 20 pounds. Mobility skills are necessary to access a variety of work locations.

The School Counselor must possess sufficient interpersonal skills to function compatibly with others. The must respond positively to supervision and to accept suggestions for improvement.
