Position Overview:

The Salem Public Schools is seeking an innovative and collaborative educator to collaborate with teachers and leaders to build capacity for expert ELL instruction in every classroom. This is an exciting opportunity for an instructional coach or excellent ESL teacher to broaden his/her impact and work as part of a dynamic department focused on increased student outcomes and equity for ELLs. The successful candidate will be a strong instructor of students, as well as a facilitator of adult learning. He/she will work closely with teachers modeling lessons, providing feedback, facilitating professional development, and supporting planning for ESL teachers across the elementary and middle schools in the district. The successful candidate will also possess expertise in language acquisition as well as an unwavering belief in the power of school communities to make a difference in the lives of children. This individual will work under the general supervision of District Director for English Language Learning. She/he will be evaluated following the professional standards articulated in the Massachusetts Teacher Rubric.

  • A valid Massachusetts' teaching license for the appropriate content area and grade;
  • A Bachelor's degree;

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

The ELL Coach:

  • Works with teachers one-on-one and in small groups to plan lessons from standards, use a wide range of curriculum materials, determine student groupings, and implement research-based instructional strategies to support implementation of WIDA standards
  • Introduces best practices in the area of ELL instruction through demonstration lessons, co-planning, peer observation, study groups, and professional development workshops
  • Builds teacher capacity to interpret and use a range of language assessment data to plan lessons and address individual language proficiency needs
  • Supports the process of identifying research-based interventions and screening tools that support tiered language instruction
  • Articulates goals, practices and program philosophy related to language acquisition as needed for staff and parents
  • Meets weekly with the ELL Director to analyze data, visit classrooms, and discuss next steps for professional development that supports growth in ELL achievement
  • Supports school and district-based data teams in monitoring progress toward meeting grade-level, school, and district-wide ELL goals

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree (Required); Masters Degree preferred;
  • Massachusetts teaching certification/licensure in ESL, required
  • Dual certification in Elementary Education, Early Childhood, Elementary Math, ELA, Special Education preferred
  • Three or more years of successful teaching in ESL or related field
  • Second language proficiency highly preferred
  • Persistent belief in the potential of all students to succeed academically; asset-based mindset
  • Deep knowledge of the WIDA Standards, Common Core and language acquisition practices
  • Demonstrated ability to model effective ELL and SEI-content lessons
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively with teachers
  • Demonstrated ability to provide effective professional development for teachers that models strong pedagogical practice for adult learning
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate respectfully and in a culturally proficiency manner with parents/guardians about student progress and language acquisition
  • Demonstrated ability to meet the expectations of the Massachusetts Standards and Indicators of Effective Teaching Practice; and

Current authorization to work in the United States.

New Teacher Orientation for all first year teachers and all teaching staff new to the Salem Public Schools for the 2018/2019 School Year will be held on August 21st and 22nd, 2018. This is a required commitment of all new teaching staff. Professional Development for all teaching staff (new and returning) will begin on August 28, 2018.
