NATURE OF POSITION:
The Title I Instructional Coach: Reading is responsible for supporting student achievement in the areas of reading and language arts. Position objectives include working with administration and teachers to improve student achievement within the framework of the student-centered coaching model.

The Title I Instructional Coach: Reading will provide professional development activities and trainings to improve the quality of reading/literacy instruction for K-5 students attending Title I schools; organize well-planned professional development; support teachers in reading instruction, assessment and intervention; support school-wide implementation of the model; model scientifically-based practices and strategies; and observe teachers in a non-evaluative setting offering feedback and promoting discussion of alternative strategies; observe and provide feedback to teachers on instruction related to literacy development; remain current with scientific based reading research (SBRR); and model integration of literacy strategies and best practices.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • To keep current with VDOE instructional resources and to support teachers and administrators with curriculum alignment (taught and assessed)
  • To incorporate and model best-practices into the instructional model using student-centered coaching
  • To generate improvement in reading instruction and reading achievement by conducting on-site, on-going literacy-related professional development
  • To assist teachers in analyzing student performance data for tiered and differentiated instruction
  • To support school-wide progress monitoring
  • To distribute assessment data to the teaching staff in a usable, organized, and electronic format
  • To deliver Professional Development (PD) to teachers at regular intervals and attend PD, as appropriate
  • To model integration of literacy strategies and best practices


Assists in developing, recommending, and administering the division's staff development program

Conducts and/or facilitates staff development workshops and seminars

Models best practices in classroom instruction

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Valid Virginia teaching license with endorsement as Reading Specialist and/or in Elementary Education PreK-6 (or equivalent)
  • At least three years of successful teaching experience at the elementary level wherein Reading instruction was a key responsibility
  • Reading Specialist Endorsement and/or Master's Degree in Curriculum and Instruction preferred
  • Ability to relate easily to teachers and administrators
  • Successful experience as a teacher leader (particularly with curriculum alignment)
  • Demonstrates exemplary classroom instruction and possesses a deep understanding of Virginia's Standards of Learning for the purpose of providing instructional support in curriculum alignment and improving student achievement levels
  • Successful implementation of all components of the balanced literacy model
  • Exceptional communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills
  • In-depth subject area knowledge
  • Ability to effectively collaborate with all stakeholders (classroom teachers, principals, instructional support teachers-OEC and Title I)

START DATE: August 1, 2018
SALARY / STIPEND: Consistent with the 2018-2019 DPS Teacher Salary Scale, depending on experience and advanced degrees. In addition, the Danville School Board pays the employee cost in full for state-mandated life insurance; and in part for state retirement and health insurance. Other benefits include sick leave and personal leave.
