POSITION TITLE: Special Education Teacher - Alternative Education

NATURE OF POSITION:
Actively engages students of varying academic levels in meaningful learning experiences. Creates and maintains a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the ability level of the student. Plans a program of learning experiences that will assist in achieving SOL skill development and progression for students at the middle and secondary level. Understands and operates on the belief that all behavior is a result of an unmet need and can be improved through appropriate targeted instruction. Instructs students in SOL objectives commensurate with curriculum and pacing guides. Complies with and enforces school rules and school board policies and procedures. Attends and participates in faculty meetings and serves on committees as appropriate. Performs other school duties and assignments as appointed.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Humanizes instruction by planning a program of study that meets the individual needs of students.
- Diagnoses and develops plans for the learning problems of students appropriate to the level of achievement.
- Refers students to specialists when deficiencies are detected or suspected.
- Implements all curriculum programs adopted system wide in a positive and efficient manner.
- Establishes clear objectives for all learning experiences and communicates these objectives to students.
- Emphasizes and enforces safety factors within the classroom, building, and throughout school property.
- Maintains a disciplined atmosphere appropriate to the teaching environment.
- Establishes reasonable classroom rules with consistent enforcement occurring in a positive way.
- Ability to multi-task.
- Actively schedules, organizes and participates in the decision-making process of the IEP team.
- Evaluates whether programs have met student's needs, in consultation with those involved with the student.
- Adherence to the student's IEP.
- Knowledge or familiarity of Virginia Alternate Assessment Program and Standards of Learning.
- Performs other school duties and assignments as appointed.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:
Must hold or be eligible for Virginia teaching license, with appropriate endorsement (General or Adaptive Curriculum).
START DATE:
SALARY / STIPEND: Consistent with the 2017-2018 DPS Teacher Salary Scale, depending on experience and advanced degrees. In addition, the Danville School Board pays the employee cost in full, for state-mandated life insurance; and in part for state retirement and for health insurance. Other benefits include sick leave and personal leave.
