Lower School Instructional Coach

Creative Minds International Public Charter School (CMIPCS) is seeking a dedicated full-time, Instructional Coach to serve as a resource and advisor to Lower School teachers and staff.

CMIPCS is a tuition-free school in NW Washington, DC, authorized to serve students from preschool through 8th grade. Now in its sixth year of operation,CMIPCS serves 440 students in Preschool (3-year olds) through 7th grade. Two 8th-grade classes will be added in 2018-19 to complete the Middle School.

Position Overview and Responsibilities

Reporting to the Director of Lower School, the CMIPCS Lower School Instructional Coach will provide coordination and facilitation of best practices staff development, and on- going coaching for teachers and staff, with the goal of expanding teacher effectiveness in all areas of the CMIPCS lower school curriculum. The Instructional Coach will facilitate teachers’ inclusive practices and effective behavior management, with the goal of creating classroom instructional excellence and improving the overall performance of lower school students (PS-5th Grade). The coach will also provide technical support to collaborate with CMI’s Instructional Leadership Team.

Coaching is a non-evaluative, learning relationship between an instructional coach and a teacher with the goal of learning together, thereby improving instruction and student achievement. The Instructional Coach works with individual teachers in developing goals for continuous improvement. The Coach observes classroom teaching and use strategies such as teaching lessons side by side with the teacher or modeling lessons where appropriate. The Coach facilitates mutual problem solving to assist teachers in implementing and mastering new teaching practices. The Instructional Coach will allocate more time to supporting new teachers and those needing improvement. Responsibilities and Duties Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Research and provide content knowledge and resources to staff about learning and teaching core content areas and in the implementation of assessments, including:

• IEYC/IPC Curriculum • Common Core Standards

• Readers/Writers Workshop Engage New York Math

• GOLD Teaching Strategies

• MAP Assessment

Possess and utilizes the following skills and competencies:

• Assessment of student skills and proficiencies;

• Data analysis and interpretation of assessment results;

• Use, analyze, and reflect on formative assessment data to improve teaching and learning;

Research and provide information and guidance regarding a range of effective and innovative core content area practices through various activities such as: 

- Individual discussions (informal and formal)

- Coaching sessions

- Demonstration lessons with pre- and post-discussion/analysis;

- Staff meetings

- Professional development sessions

School Wide Professional Development:

• Assist the Director of Lower School in creating a calendar for school wide professional development (PD) that is directly related to school and district improvement plans.

• Facilitate PD activities by presenting directly to staff or scheduling individuals to present activities to staff, other schools or individuals as needed.

• Coordinate activities and scheduling of school and district trained staff in targeted PD such as (but not limited to) the integration of technology, and differentiated instruction.

• Support the common system of classroom walk-through.

Qualifications and Skills

• Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred;

• Valid Teaching License

• Minimum of five years of successful classroom teaching experience;

Minimum of one year of school leadership experience or enrollment in a • leadership preparation program. (Reading Coach, Testing Coordinator, Site • Council, School Improvement Team, Head Teacher, etc.);

• Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to work positively and cooperatively with others;

• Knowledge of and experience with effective instruction and assessment;
