    The filling of this position is based upon continued funding in the Board of Education budget.

    Note: Teachers dually certified in TESOL, Bilingual Education or ESL, with experience in Sheltered Instruction or fluency in a language other than English, will be given preference for all Stamford Public School positions.

    Preference in hiring for this position will be given to internal candidates.

    General Statement:
    The Athletic Director reports directly to the principal of the school (or principal's designee), and is responsible for the operation of the school's Interscholastic Athletic Program. The Athletic Director manages the internal functions of the total athletic program in the school. The Athletic Director will work with district and school leadership to support the implementation of the SPS Strategic District Improvement Plan. The primary goal of the Athletic Director is to provide equitable opportunities for each and every student to participate in an extracurricular athletic activity that will foster physical skills, personal growth, a sense of worth and confidence, and a knowledge and understanding of the pleasures of sport and the principles of fair play.

    Major Responsibilities:
  • Leadership and Supervision (20%)
    • Provides leadership in the recruitment, selection, and assignment of coaches and verifies that the coach has forwarded his/her coaching permit to the human resources department.
    • Provides data and information to assist administrators in making sound decisions and committing resources for the athletic program.
    • Assists in the establishment and maintenance of district policies.
    • Evaluates certified staff as necessary.
    • Completes an evaluation form and holds a conference with all coaches within three weeks after the conclusion of their sport season.
    • Provides ongoing supervision of coaches.
    • Attendance at sports events, including those scheduled on weekends, holidays, and evenings.
  • Management of Program (40%)
    • Assumes responsibility for the organization and scheduling of all interscholastic athletic events.
    • Seeks and recommends suitable competitions for all non-conference events/games.
    • Secures game workers for athletic contests, chain crews, announcers, clock operators, score keepers, line judges, etc. and keeps a list of those workers.
    • Hires or arranges for officials, public safety personnel, and medical personnel as needed.
    • Confirms official's contracts and all non-conference contest contracts.
    • Arranges transportation for athletic contests.
    • Coordinates the use of facilities with the Physical Education Department in the school.
    • Assumes general responsibility for proper supervision of home games.
    • Prepares a master sports calendar that includes conference and non-conference games/events.
    • Arranges field and gym practice schedules and coordinates gym, building and athletic field use and maintains the athletic building use calendar.
    • Arranges all details of visiting teams' needs.
    • Assists with the approval of "Building Use Forms."
    • Keeps records of the results of all athletic contests.
    • Provides a channel through which students and the community may express their concerns about the athletic program.
    • Develops, implements, and oversees an academic support program for student athletes in collaboration with school personnel, coaches, and administration.
    • Assists with college recruiting and scholarships for student athletes who wish to continue as a student-athlete in college.
    • Maintains communications with Principal on all relevant issues.
  • Student Health, Eligibility, and Participation (10%)
    • Verifies each athlete's eligibility to participate according to established physical and academic requirements of eligibility for participation in each sport and keeps properly completed verification files.
    • Ensures adherence to appropriate procedures and practices, which protect the health, safety and well-being of student athletes, including athletic physicals and concussion protocols.
    • Coordinates the collection and maintenance of rosters.
    • Orders appropriate seasonal and post season awards for each program.
    • Coordinates the ordering of team apparel.
    • Assures appropriate use of the athletic trainer.
  • Management of Supplies and Budgets (10%)
    • Prepares and administers the athletic program budget and accounts for all athletic program expenditures.
    • Requisitions appropriate program supplies and equipment.
    • Supervises all ticket sales at athletic contests.
    • Supervises school fund-raising events for athletic teams and assumes responsibility for proper handling of funds.
  • Code of Conduct (10%)
    • Distributes athletic training rules yearly to all athletic participants.
    • Collects and maintains on file a signed copy of student letters of intent.
    • Administers the school athletic code in a fair and consistent manner that is within the intent of the code.
    • Ensures district adherence to all athletic and district policies, administrative rules, procedures, and codes relating to participation in athletics.
    • Mediates the resolution of problems, issues, and concerns that may arise between coaches and athletic programs.
  • Mandates, Regulations, and Professional Development (10%)
    • Attends athletic conference meetings.
    • Stays abreast of state and federal mandates, current research, trends, products, and CIAC rules and regulations.
    • Ensures compliance with CIAC/FCIAC rules and regulations.
    • Ensures compliance with Title IX rules and regulations.
    • Attends FCIAC meetings and volunteers for league committees and activities.
    • Coordinates the training and professional development activities for all high school coaches.

    Performs other related duties as requested by the principal.

    Knowledge and Skills:
    • Knowledge of high school athletic programming and implementation.
    • Knowledge of coaching practices.
    • Knowledge of student development.
    • Use of data-driven decision making to determine effectiveness of programs and initiatives.
    • Excellent conceptual, analytical, problem solving, organization, and leadership skills.
    • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, policies, and procedures related to public schools, specifically related to athletics.
    • Ability to promote a sense of caring and respect among athletic participants and the community.
    • Ability to foster teamwork and collegiality with members of the school community.
    • Ability to work as a member of a team.
    • Ability to analyze and synthesize information; develop and monitor a plan; and produce data focused reports.
    • Self-directed with attention to detail and excellent time management skills.
    • Exceptional oral and written communication skills and a proven track record of working collaboratively with multiple and diverse constituencies.
    • High standards of ethics, honesty, and integrity.

    Qualifications:
    • CT CSDE Intermediate Administration or Supervision certification (092).
    • CT CSDE certification in Interscholastic/Intramural Coach (600).
    • Minimum of five (5) years of teaching experience.
    • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in a leadership position.
    • Experience as a Varsity Head Coach preferred.
    • Demonstrated capacity to work well with other people.
    • Superior communication skills (oral and written).
    • High standards of ethics, honesty and integrity.
    • Experience in an urban district, preferred.
    • Multilingual preferred.
    • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent and/or Stamford Board of Education may find appropriate.

    Note: While serving as Athletic Director, one cannot also serve as a coach.
