Job Details
Our flagship high school, Brooklyn Ascend High School (BAHS), opened to 9th grade students in September 2015 and will expand by a grade per year through grade 12.
At BAHS, we are looking for educators who believe in restorative practices and teach students to resolve conflicts on their own, understand the impact of their actions, and acknowledge responsibility to the school community. We believe that a true liberal arts education – which fosters and prizes critical thinking and independence of thought—cannot be joined to a no-excuses culture that emphasizes silence and compliance. It is a flagrant contradiction. We prepare students for success in college and in life by fostering agency—our students' confidence that they are in control of their own lives and can act of their own free choices, their conviction that they can assert their voice and power in the world.
We are looking for a college readiness teacher who will manage the 11th grade caseload and lead the planning and implementation of our eleventh grade college seminar course. This course will ensure that students are prepared for the SAT college entrance exam and have the knowledge needed to navigate the college application process. The college readiness teacher will utilize class to teach SAT strategy and content while also ensuring students become well versed in the college options available to them, create a balanced college list, prepare their personal statement, and apply to a summer experience. This is an ideal opportunity for a dynamic individual to play a role in growing and shaping a premier charter school committed to helping students not just to matriculate in college, but to graduate from college.
Teaching
- Plan and lead instruction, primarily focused on SAT content and strategy for Math and Evidence-Based Reading & Writing (EBRW)
- Utilize formal and informal assessment data to drive instruction and ensure student mastery of standards
- Communicate results to students, families and colleagues of SAT data assessment
- Build a motivating and inclusive classroom environment using restorative practices
- Create and maintain strong relationships with students and families
- Ensure that students exit the course with a balanced college list, personal statement and updated resume to support the students' transitions to their college access and success counselors
Programming
- Manage, plan and implement in-house career exploration related events
- Manage the updating and creation of summer program guidebook
- Manage summer exploration career fair
- Plan and chaperone junior college trips
- Support students in applying to summer programs
- Assist with practice and official SAT exams on five Saturdays throughout the school year
- Support advisory planning for eleventh grade
Staff and reporting relationships
The founding college readiness teacher reports to the director of college and alumni counseling.
Qualifications
- Minimum of three years' teaching experience; experience in an urban setting preferred
- Demonstrated experience with SAT preparation, teaching, or tutoring in English or Math disciplines
- Knowledge of current trends and topics facing higher education institutions affecting students and college retention rates.
- Strong ability to develop and maintain positive and strategic relationships with colleges and universities
- Ability to provide assurance and counsel students experiencing the typical challenges associated with the college search process by creating an environment where students feels safe, supported, and challenged.
- Passion for higher education accessibility and completion of college for first generation and underserved students
- Understanding and awareness of barriers that underrepresented, low-income, and/or first-generation populations face on their pursuit to a college degree.
- Relentless drive to set and achieve ambitious goals
- Strong collaboration and teamwork skills
- Creative, strategic, and meticulous thinker in assessing and improving current college counseling program and developing new elements to enrich the quality of the program
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Alignment with a restorative approach to discipline, where discipline is approached an opportunity for learning, growth, and community-building
- Trustworthiness and ability to maintain the utmost confidentiality
