(NON-STATE SERVICE)

(Executive Director of Secondary Education & Career and Technical Education)

OFFICE OF ACADEMIC EDUCATION

Starting Salary:  $106,431.30

(salary will be negotiable and commensurate with experience)

The Mississippi Department of Education (MDE) is seeking an Educ-Associate Superintendent (Executive Director, Secondary Education and Career and Technical Education) for the Office of Academic Education.

This individual must possess the educational expertise to provide oversight of all activities and projects for the Office of Secondary Education and Career (6-12) and Technical Education.  The Executive Director for the Office of Secondary Education is responsible for leading and managing the work to provide high quality Career and Technical Education programs for the local education agencies. This individual must be able to oversee the development of secondary curriculum, professional development for directors and teachers, provide oversight of student organizations, work with postsecondary for alignment and articulation of courses, work with business and industry to make sure programs are aligned with economic needs and other duties associated with all secondary education and career and technical education. 

  RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead the State's 6 – 12 instructional programs.
  • Implement and expand grades 6 – 12 innovative programs.
  • Lead and direct the K-12 school counseling program.
  • Provide oversight for the state’s JROTC program.
  • Work with all school districts to improve graduation rates.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to improve college and career readiness.
  • Establish and maintain productive relationships with key national organizations involving 6 – 12 secondary education and career and technical education.
  • Prepare and maintain all budgets and contracts related to the Office of Secondary Education and Career and Technical Education.
  • Prepare information and presentations for the State Board of Education (SBE), the state legislature, and various related Commissions.
  • Serve as a member of the Chief Academic Officer’s staff and collaborate with peers within the agency on state policies and/or procedures.
  • Serve as the liaison with other offices and communicate regularly to ensure maximum efficiency in the delivery of services to schools and districts.
  • Select and manage personnel needed to perform the activities within the program area.
  • Any additional duties as assigned by the Chief Academic Officer or State Superintendent of Education.

SPECIAL QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Extensive experience supervising grades 6 – 12 instructional and career and technical education programs
  • At least five (5) years of successful administrative experience in an accredited higher education, K-12 public, or private school system

EXPERIENCE/EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

A Master's Degree from an accredited four year college or university and five (5) years of professional experience, three (3) years of which must have been directly related to the special experience defined below;

OR

A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four year college or university and six (6) years of professional experience, (3) years of which must have been directly related to the special experience defined below.

SPECIAL EXPERIENCE:

Employment must have been in an administrative, professional capacity in an area of work related to the functional responsibility of the area in which the position exists. In those areas where specialists provide the primary source of functional and technical knowledge for planning and accomplishing the mission of the area, the incumbent must also be experienced in that profession. Work experience must have included supervising and coordinating a variety of functions.
