Danbury Public Schools is a district educating nearly 11,000 students and employing over 2,000 employees. Located less than 90 minutes from New York City, the City of Danbury provides a diverse setting that spans both urban and suburban neighborhoods. The District operates 22 individual buildings located across the City, of which three (3) house administrative staff only. The remaining buildings are schools that range in size from Danbury High School, with over 3,000 students, to Great Plain School, a small but expanding elementary school currently with 335 students.
The position of Coordinator of Security and Safety is responsible for the safety and security needs and emergency preparedness of this large population of students, faculty, staff and visitors. The Coordinator shall work collaboratively and intensely with both District Leadership and the City of Danbury's security team, including leadership in law enforcement, fire service, emergency responders, and Homeland Security, to ensure the District's preparedness through establishment and implementation of an all-hazard approach to planning.

Duties and responsibilities will include:
  • Evaluation of security and emergency preparedness of each school, including but not limited to thorough review and implementation of recommendations from the School Wide Safety Audit conducted by Safe Havens International.
  • ?Development of comprehensive, district-wide safety and security plans and protocols, with subsequent implementation of plans and necessary training and assessment;
  • Work collaboratively with individual building administrators to prepare an all-hazards approach safety and security plan that is uniquely designed for the individual building
  • Essential elements of the Safety Plan should include layers of security including
    • Use of technology
    • Perimeter security
    • Staff training
  • Properly conducted security drills that reflect all-hazard approach
  • ?Coordination and collaboration with local law enforcement, fire service and emergency responders
  • Conduct school security audits District-wide, with attention to the individualized needs of elementary and secondary buildings.
  • Participate in rapid response to emergency situations, through direct collaboration with the Superintendent. Response may also include coordination with public safety responders, government and first aid personnel, as well as public relations oversight.
  • Research, assess, establish and implement a District wide Safety Advocate Training Program, with implementation of national best practices standards where applicable.
  • Responsibility for supervision, evaluation and discipline of all Safety Advocates District wide, and participation in the hiring process.
  • Work collaboratively with School Resource Officers (SROs) assigned throughout secondary level school buildings to further assess safety and preparedness, and to identify potential security issues.
  • Work collaboratively to identify additional sources of funding to support and establish prioritized Security Initiatives, including acquisition of technology, promotion of comprehensive training in threat assessment and response for all staff.
  • Participate in quarterly District-wide Safety Committee to address operational safety issues. Works in conjunction with Coordinator of Facilities in recommending safety and security equipment purchases and upgrades, overseeing safety equipment including but not limited to fire extinguishers, emergency and exit lights and AED equipment, and compliance with Federal, OSHA, State and Local regulations.
  • Present a detailed annual Safety and Security Update to the Board of Education that updates status of preparedness District-Wide. In anticipation of the annual audit, this position may also be required to identify available self-assessment tools or other protocols designed to continually assess the level of preparedness for an all-hazard event.
  • Work with appropriate City personnel to ensure timely submission of all mandated local, state and federal reports pertaining to safety and security.
  • Work collaboratively with District Finance Director to establish an appropriate budget for both short-term and long-term security needs, including but not limited to physical plant improvements and new technology implementation.
  • Attend all local and regional meetings focusing on school security as a representative of the Danbury Public Schools and the City of Danbury. Responsibilities may also include identifying appropriate trade or other organizations focused on school safety and security for participation and membership opportunities.

Qualifications:
  • The District seeks an individual who has significant demonstrated professional work experience in at least one of the primary fields relating to this position:
    • Security
    • Emergency Management
  • The successful candidate will need to demonstrate the aptitude to develop expertise in each of the alternative areas to fulfill the responsibilities of Coordinator.
  • NIMS Training
  • Any of the following professional credentials are highly desirable:
    • Completion of state or federal advanced training programs in military police, security, public safety, emergency management
    • Undergraduate degree, including coursework in relevant fields, and graduate degree
  • Three to five years supervising employees. Experience working with collective bargaining agreements preferred.
  • Personal skills that include a high degree of diplomacy, flexibility and adaptability.
  • Ability to communicate clearly, with demonstrated problem solving skills.
